205 Democrats Keep Court Packing Alive & 192 Refuse to Condemn Socialism | Whiteford, Murray
Court packing is still on the table, and this week the House of Representatives put every member on the record about it. A one-sentence constitutional amendment from Congressman Andy Biggs of Arizona would have written into the Constitution what Americans assume is already there, that the Supreme Court has nine justices. It failed 212 to 206. Every Republican voted yes. 205 Democrats voted no, and so did the House's one independent. The Constitution never says nine. Congress set the number, Congress has moved it before, and it has held at nine since 1869 on nothing but restraint. The day before that vote, the same House voted 220 to 192 to condemn socialism and to call for the enactment of the SAVE America Act — the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, which requires proof of citizenship to register to vote. 192 Democrats voted no. Within about a day, a caucus inside the Democratic Socialists of America answered a vote of the United States Congress with a membership sign-up link that drew almost 3,000 likes, the organization's Portland chapter answered by quoting the Communist Manifesto, and a movement magazine reported that the New York City chapter has grown from about 5,900 members to more than 15,000.
