North Carolina’s Republican Senators Refuse to Meet with Tea Party Patriots Activists

News-placeholder-9

The first Republican president, Abraham Lincoln, immortalized the concept of a government “of the people, by the people, for the people” in the Gettysburg Address. In North Carolina, Republican Senators Thom Tillis and Richard Burr might want to brush off one of the greatest speeches ever delivered by an American president to remind themselves of their responsibilities to the people who elected them.

Last week, as part of an effort to demonstrate support for repealing Obamacare, Tea Party Patriots activists delivered a letter with signatures supporting repeal to their home state senators and reminding them of their promises.

In North Carolina, our activists called ahead to say they were coming to drop off the signatures and discuss the importance of keeping the promise to repeal Obamacare with the senators or their staff. Upon arriving at the state office of Sen. Tillis, patriots were stopped in the building lobby and told they were not allowed to visit the senator’s office without an appointment and they would not be allowed to deliver the signatures or speak to the senator or a staffer. After a phone call to Sen. Tillis’ office, our activists were informed their only option was to leave the letter and signatures with a U.S. Marshal in the lobby of the building. The marshal informed the activists in the lobby he could not deliver the signatures to Sen. Tillis’ office. Finally, a staffer came down to collect them and the marshal prevented our activists from taking any photos inside the building. So much for engaging and representing your constituents!

Activists delivering signatures at the state office of Senator Burr didn’t have any more luck – the senator’s office was completely closed and the signatures had to be left with the Chamber of Commerce office in the same building.

Sadly, at this point it is crystal clear that some Republican senators are running from their promises to repeal Obamacare, which has been a promise repeated over and over again since Obamacare was passed in 2010. That year, Republicans won back the House, but told activists if they wanted Obamacare repealed, they would have to also deliver a Senate majority to Republicans. That majority arrived after the 2014 elections, but again Republicans told activists they couldn’t keep their promise until there was a Republican occupying the White House. After the 2016 elections, Republicans have majorities in both chambers of Congress and the White House. The time for excuses is over and we expect our Senators to keep their promises! They won’t do it on their own, so we NEED YOUR HELP!

Please call (202) 224-3121, ask for your Republican Senator, or the office of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell if you don’t have a Republican Senator, and tell them to keep their promise to repeal Obamacare ‘root and branch!’

It is clear they won’t keep their word unless we keep the pressure on!
