Texas restaurateur closing sports bars because of Obamacare, says mandate ‘makes no sense’

The owners of a Fort Worth, Texas sports bar are closing their doors after five years in business, citing the burden of complying with Obamacare regulations as the straw that broke the camel’s back.

“If we were to stay in business, there was no way for us to have borne the weight of the oppressive penalties for failing to comply with the mandates of that legislature. Therefore, another establishment goes out of business. Over fifty people lose their jobs. Suppliers and vendors lose the revenue of our account,” reads a statement from owners Bill and Johnnie Katz posted to Facebook Monday.

The so-called Affordable Care Act requires businesses with more than 50 employees to provide health-insurance coverage to 95 percent of their employees, including dependents up to age 26, according to Obamacare Facts.

Katz in an interview with the Fort-Worth Star-Telegram says, between his two restaurants, he has more than 50 employees but doesn’t provide health insurance and therefore on Jan. 1 faces a minimum penalty of $200,000.

“I don’t have that kind of money,” Katz said, referring to the penalty. “So instead of 50 or 60 people without healthcare, we have 50 or 60 people that aren’t employed anymore. It makes no sense.”
