Tea Party Patriots Action Slams Democrats for Shutting Down Government

Atlanta, GA – Last night, Senate Democrats voted against taking up a clean continuing resolution to keep the federal government open while negotiations over a longer-term spending plan continue. Consequently, unless Senate Democrats change their minds today, the federal government will begin a temporary partial shutdown beginning at 12:01 am tomorrow morning. In response, Tea Party Patriots Action Honorary Chairman Jenny Beth Martin issued the following statement:

“Last night, Senate Democrats voted to shut down the federal government. They are playing politics, and it will backfire.

“Senate Majority Leader Thune is rightfully holding the line against the Democrats’ outrageous demand for an extension of the extended Obamacare premium tax credits. These tax credits were always meant to be temporary, and extending them would cost $350 billion over the next decade. In addition, the Democrats are also demanding a restoration of the Medicaid savings the Congress enacted just a few months ago. Restoring that wasteful spending — which, among other things, included taxpayer-funded health care for illegal aliens — would cost another trillion dollars. But it doesn’t stop there — Democrats are also demanding the president give up his authority to rescind funds previously approved by the Congress, an authority presidents have employed for centuries to save taxpayers money. Insisting on attaching these measures to a continuing resolution — a short-term spending bill meant to keep government open while negotiations continue — is an unacceptable demand, and they know it.

“The Democrats’ liberal base is still annoyed at Minority Leader Schumer for not saying ‘no’ to President Trump every chance he gets. Schumer wants to keep his job as Minority Leader, and he wants to avoid a primary challenge from his left when he runs for reelection in 2028. Let’s keep that in mind to put Sen. Schumer’s demands in context — he’s not doing what he’s doing for the good of the people, he’s doing it with an eye to saving his own political hide, and nothing more.”
