One step closer to repealing Obamacare

This week, the GOP-controlled Congress took one step closer to repealing Obamacare for good. So in the spirit of giving credit where credit is due, we’re cautiously applauding our lawmakers today. According to news reports, [1], the Senate managed to pass a budget that sets the stage for cutting $4.3 trillion in benefit programs over the next decade – including dissolving Obamacare. The passage sets the stage for a repeal of Obamacare through a procedural shortcut called reconciliation. At this point the Senate and the House have until mid-April to resolve differences in the budget through conference. Once both chambers agree on language, ...

ObamaCare’s Fifth Birthday Makes Us Sick

Five years ago today, without a single Republican vote, Congress rammed the unconstitutional Protection and Affordable Care Act into law. We know it as “Obamacare.” As former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) one famously said, “[W]e have to pass [Obamacare], so that you can find out what is in it.” Five years later, we now know why this massive overhaul of America’s already imperfect healthcare system was rushed through at rapid speed before the public could scrutinize the details. Despite President Barack Obama’s promises that if you liked your plan, you could keep it, millions of people have lost their insurance coverage. Millions ...

UC-Irvine tries to ban the American flag

The student government at the University of California-Irvine recently tried to ban the American flag from common areas on campus. No, it was not a joke. The measure passed by a vote of 6-4 before being ultimately vetoed by the student body president. Still, it remained a blow to both common sense and freedom of speech everywhere. Among the many reasons listed for banning the stars and stripes at UC-Irvine was that sometimes, “freedom of speech…can be interpreted as hate speech.” It would take years and years to try and unpack that logic, but we’d start with a simple question: in what instance could the simple hanging of an American ...

Statement of Jenny Beth Martin on Boehner’s latest cave

“Sadly, we’ve seen yet another reason why conservatives do not and should not trust Establishment Republicans. Rewarded by the American people with historic majorities for opposing executive amnesty, their capitulation began almost immediately. “First, Speaker Boehner whipped votes with the President in December’s lame duck session, so eager was he to fund nearly the entire government through September. ‘Don’t worry,’ we were told. The House would not fund the Obama executive amnesty. “And how many days ago did the Speaker reiterate his hard line and flex his new-found muscle on Fox News Sunday? Now, yet again, he again uses ...
