Letter to the Editor – Where’s the Border Security? – Week of June 3

As the Senate continues to debate S. 744, the amnesty bill crafted by Senators Chuck Schumer of New York and Marco Rubio of Florida, it is important to remember that the vast majority of Americans oppose this bill.  When asked, Americans overwhelmingly want border security before any discussions about amnesty.  In fact, according to several polls, more than 70% of Americans are in agreement that border security must be the first priority.  But this bill does the exact opposite by granting immediate amnesty to 11 million illegal immigrants, without making any strides to secure the border.

These are a few of the bill’s major shortcomings:

  • S. 744 does not secure the border or strengthen national security in any way.
  • S.744 does not add any additional Border Patrol agents to patrol the vast land areas between ports of entry.
  • S.744 does not require any border security measures be taken on the northern border or along the coasts, which is where many illegal immigrants arrive.
  • S.744 leaves in place policies that direct immigration agents to release illegal immigrants the Administration deems “low priority.”

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement Employees Union and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services both oppose S. 744.  ICE says the bill would pose a “danger to the general public” and USCIS says the bill would allow thousands of illegal immigrants who have committed serious crimes to gain legal status.  As our nation’s premier experts on border security matters, shouldn’t both of these organizations have been consulted during this Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearings?   Instead, the Senate completely blocked the ICE union and USCIS out of the discussions.

We need to remind our Senator, (insert full name of your U.S. Senator) that the government works for us, and we demand real border security.
