A shameless attempt to exploit tragedy

To the Editor:

I believe that the Democrat response to the tragic killings in Aurora, Colorado and Newtown, Connecticut are nothing more than a shameless attempt to exploit these sad events in pursuit of their goal of disarming law-abiding American citizens.

The Democrats claim to be motivated by a concern for public safety and yet they advocate passing the kind of laws that have never proven to reduce violent crime in any way. I would think that most people would find it a little curious that the weapons they are attempting to ban are very infrequently used to commit the violent crimes they claim to be concerned about. I myself find it very curious that many of the same people who claim to be outraged by the murder of 20 first-graders and clamor for gun control, also enthusiastically support the slaughter of millions of unborn children as a ”woman’s right to choose”.

Law-abiding citizens, who are armed, are, and always have been, a deterrent to tyranny. The degree to which these citizens are disarmed directly correlates with an increased potential for tyranny on the part of those who remain well-armed. Democrats want government to be large, powerful and the most important thing in your life. They do not appear to support much of anything that puts power in the hands of American citizens and/or maintains a balance of power between the government and the people. Frankly, I think that they would just as soon govern without that pesky ”consent of the people”.

Democrats would have us believe that there is no legitimate reason for a law-abiding American to have a semiautomatic rifle and a 30 round magazine. Well, if a person, who does not abide by the law (including The Constitution), shows up at your door thusly armed and wishing to unjustly deprive you of life, liberty or property, then what?

I would close by asking people to beware of the incremental erosion of liberty i.e., if you give them a 10 round limit on a magazine, next time there’s a shooting tragedy, they will ask for five.
