Senator Cantwell’s letter was in response to mine:
CA – Senator Diane Feinstein will move forward on a proposed senate bill that would greatly infringe on the right of the people to keep and bear Arms.
She request that the previous act be reinstated and given more teeth. She plans on doing this quickly in the month of January 2013.
As an American, I feel this to be an act of overreaching power by the federal government, and not the original intent of the Declaration of Independence, or the Constitution of the United States of America.
The common sense approach must take the forefront of all discussions, and not over reaching emotions.
I have several weapons, all legally purchased, I also have a concealed weapons permit from two states. As a responsible American, and prior military service which includes a family history in this country since the 1620’s; we believe in defending all people that stand firm on the principles our freedoms were founded on.
It’s with this in mind I propose the following considerations:
1. Don’t call it gun control; but gun safety.
2. No sale of weapons where background checks are not conducted.
3. Allow concealed weapons carry in all states with same reasonable checks with nationwide standard.
4. Weapons education and training must be required for anyone who carries or purchases one.
5. Gun safes a must for all gun owners.
6. Magazines for all rifles/long guns need only be twenty rounds; for pistols 10 round capacity, greater than this should fall under the federal firearms license.
7. Do not call semi-autos assault weapons, only full automatic weapons should be placed in this category.
We will be prepared to take this matter to the Supreme Court of the United States. It will be proven that the original intent of the Founding Fathers was not just about hunting or sport shooting.
It must be said in these terms:

Also it is said that Clarence Thomas, U.S. Supreme Court Justice stated the following.
”As I have traveled across the country, I have been astounded just how many of our fellow citizens feel strongly about their constitutional rights but have no idea what they are, or for that matter, what the Constitution says. I am not suggesting that they become Constitutional scholars–whatever that means. I am suggesting, however, that if one feels strongly about his or her rights, it does make sense to know generally what the Constitution says about them. It is at least as easy to understand as a cell phone contract–and vastly more important.”
In Closing, my deepest sympathy to all who have suffered loss, it is tragic for the loss of any life…

i agree with some not all.. for example..
1.gun control vs gun safety political correctness that can come back to screw you..
2. if you are a business that falls under state or fed reg then yes. but the right for a lawful transfer of ownership between citizens should not be infringed upon.
3.this is already allowed in most state, i would go one step further, allow open carry as some state allow.
4. agree, prior service or law enforcement should and is considered, in some states.
5.requiring gun safes is the citizens choice, not big brothers.
6.any amount of round capacity should be allowed.. legal gun owners aren’t the issue it is the illegal ones… they need to have the hammer brought down on them..
7. agreed, education of the people should be instilled in the schools. this is so they know their rights and not continue to be indoctrinated as to the progressives/liberals versions.

criminals ARE one aspect of the problem, mental illness is another.the issue you are talking about is not about the criminal but the mentally ill. you are correct that the mother should have locked the safe, but she didn’t. Knowing her son was the way he was, she had the responsibility to do what was right… she didn’t and there lies one of the mass shooting problems… if you know you have wacky people in your house hold, then you are responsible to ensure they can’t get at them.. PERIOD..The chain of issues in this case were ended in both of their death’s and the terrible result of the Mothers’ choices caused this devastation in CT…
what gubmint authority is needed or is in existence for matches control… i suspect none, but common sense and adult supervision left to the INDIVIDUAL is the authority.. Laws and law enforcement ARE in place to restrict children from driving cars, but sometimes, as some TV shows have aired, they do get into cars and drive. the adult supervision was the missing control there…Again it comes down to the smallest of supervision, the family unit..
Guys it’s a society problem stemming from the breakdown of the family units that has been facilitated by the progressive movement for the last 80 years. Until we correct the human problem we will not be able to stop the madness out there. Besides the FBI statistics show that consistently for every year the murders by blunt objects or even by hands outstrip the murders by guns. We need to quit blaming the tools and start addressing the underlying problems
the children should be pulled out of public schools and return to the local aareas with true teaching of economics, morals, history, math and science….
