WE have had excellent foreign policy leaders in the past. Reagan was superb. The ’Great Communicator’ just before taking office was going to inherit the Iranian Hostage situation. When the press asked him about claims that the Iranian leadership was scared of Reagan, his response was (accuracy in check), ”I don’t know why they should be afraid of me. I’m not afraid of them!” What a great line. The day before or the day he took office, Iran freed the hostages.
Another great foreign policy line of his was, ”I am not going to base my foreign policy on how the Soviets are going to respond!” That says it all. WE cannot worry about what other governments think about our foreign policy decisions. Ours must be based on what is in the best interest of our citizens.
