Norm is retired now and Derek Kilmer was elected in this position. Here is an answer fro Derick to a letter I sent to him about gun control.

    Dear Larry,

Thank for you for contacting me about the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School and potential legislative responses to it. I appreciate you taking the time to write and share your thoughts with me.

My response to the tragedy in Newtown was not as a policymaker, but as a father of two little girls. When Jennifer and I drop our kids off at school, we want them to be filled with hope and excitement about the day ahead – never with questions about whether they will be safe. That’s what all parents want. That’s certainly what the parents in Newtown wanted.

Whether for hunting, sport shooting, or self-defense, like a majority of Americans I believe strongly that the Second Amendment guarantees the right of law-abiding Americans to own and buy guns. I do not believe the federal government can or should take away guns from law-abiding citizens and I would not support any legislation that would infringe on this right. I do, though, believe that Congress can and should find effective, bipartisan solutions to keep kids safe.

The President’s proposal is a serious effort to develop a comprehensive approach to reducing violence. There seems to be bipartisan consensus regarding several elements of his proposal. We can improve public safety while respecting people’s Second Amendment rights thorough common sense steps like improving school safety and mental health services, strengthening the enforcement of existing laws, and enhancing background checks so dangerous weapons don’t end up in the wrong hands.

The President’s proposal is the beginning of the conversation. The path forward should be focused on evidenced-based steps that will actually improve public safety and respect constitutional rights. In the days ahead, I’ll be listening to law enforcement groups, teachers, families, and gun owners in our region while reviewing the President’s proposals and while Congress develops proposals of its own.

I will be sure to keep your thoughts in mind as Congress debates this issue in the future. I encourage you to continue to share your views with me on this topic or any other issue. Thank you for reaching out. I always enjoy hearing from constituents.

    Sincerely,

    Derek Kilmer
    Member of Congress
