Jerry, what they should do and what they will do are usually two different things.

Jerry, did you see my post of the letters I sent to the President, Vice President, Congress, My Governor and State Legislature, and the School Board about actually doing something to help stop the vulnerability now existent in schools and public places?

First off, let me state this is definitely NOT about Gun Regulations or Gun Bans etc. It is about finding a workable and efficient way, to lower the possibility of having such an occurrence happen again, making it safer for Teachers and Children.

My concern is first and foremost for Safety of the people in the Schools, and creating the ways to eliminate a tragedy like the one that happened in New Town, from ever happening again.

Since the Emotional Rhetoric in Washington seems to be centered on The tool used in the tragedy, instead of on how to immediately respond to, and correct to the known vulnerability of schools around the Nation. Let me offer this possible solution. This can be implemented and fully functional within a week of it becoming Law, provided there is enough political resolve to actually create something that lessens the known threats.

I feel our kids are at greater risk because of the call to ban guns and vary little constructive talk on correcting the vulnerability of public places like schools. Even in a situation where the Restrictions are the highest like in Connecticut, and the existing Security systems are installed, this tragedy happened because the proper steps to prevent them were not employed. The National Paradigm has shifted and we are playing catch up to figure out new ways to deal with the spiraling violence. Here is an alternative that will substantially reduce the risk to Teachers and Students;

1. Make it mandatory that all teachers receive specific intruder defense training, so their reactions will conform to a workable standard, and be effective should they be called to use them.

2. Training all teachers in the proficient use of Tasers and some sort of Police strength Spray Device, and requiring all teachers to have them on their person and ready for use while they are in school.
This would be a workable measure for point/classroom defense, it would give the Teachers and Students a fighting chance until the perpetrator could be permanently subdued, and give the Teacher and students a chance to survive the incident. It would also prevent the same type of Brave but futile sacrifice like the Principal and School Psychologist made. Unfortunately that Brave Sacrifice did not save the children because they did not have at least a Non-Lethal means to resist the attacker.

3. Mandate a standardized alert system be required in all schools, with panic buttons in classrooms and the main offices, to alert both the School Teachers, Students, and the Authorities, that a dangerous unauthorized intruder is present, and for them to to enact defensive protocols until the all clear is sounded. these protocols could be simply Locking Classroom Doors, moving the students to a safer position in the room away from the entry and having the teachers take up a position where they could from relative cover Taser anyone who came in. If a Second person came in they could pepper spray them and that would disorient the attacker/s long enough to kick away any arms that they might be carrying and hold them until they could be permanently subdued.

4. This part is critical since an attacker won’t always come in while students are in classes. To help bolster security and safety, I also suggest that Volunteers from the school staff, who are able and capable both Physically, Mentally, and Psychologically, be given full Police training in tactical firearm usage, the laws covering such usage, and be made special Deputies in the Sheriff’s Agency for their School district. Then they can be authorized and armed at the schools, to stop any psychotic individual, or Criminally bent person who threatens to cause mayhem and death. Not doing this only exacerbates the reality that this will keep happening with no effective way to stop it or defend against it.

NOTE I do not believe that all teachers should be armed with Deadly Force, but I do Advocate that all of them be armed with NON-LETHAL DEVICES.
Remember the Tasers and Spray devices are ’NOT’ Lethal Weapons, but would provide a first line of defense that would save lives until the Volunteer Staff or the Regular Police arrive on the scene to end the threat.

5. Please caution the news media to keep them from exacerbating a critical situation by sensationalizing the attacks. over reporting on them, and by doing so are potentially causing copycat attacks by the Psychotic, or Mentally Ill potential attackers lurking out there.

I believe this is a sensible idea that should be carried out immediately.

Rich, feel free to send it and have all of your friends send it too. Put it in the local papers OP-ED Page, send it to the liberal groups too. I think we need to actually do these things to protect the children immediately.
