Rep. Conyers Should Resign Immediately and Congress Should Provide Americans with Answers About Use of ‘Shush Fund’

Atlanta, GA – Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund Chairman Jenny Beth Martin released the following statement today, reacting to reports that taxpayer funds were used to settle with a victim alleging sexual misconduct on the part of Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.).

“The shocking report about Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) and the 2015 use of taxpayer funds to settle allegations against him of improper sexual advances toward a former staffer pulls back the curtain to give Americans a disturbing look at how Congress’ ‘Shush Fund’ works in practice. Using taxpayer funds to silence alleged victims of sexual abuse by Members of Congress is completely unacceptable. Rep. Conyers was enabled by this process to stand for re-election in 2016 without his constituents’ knowledge of the claims against him or the settlement made with the alleged victim. He should resign from office immediately, and Congress should provide answers to the American people about which Members of Congress have benefited from taxpayer-funded settlements in response to allegations of sexual misconduct.”
