Your tax dollars are being spent to promote sparkly styling spray for dogs, a study on the healthfulness of peas, lentils and garbanzo beans, and even to encourage bird watching. An article in this week’s Washington Examiner points out that these are just a few of the thousands of companies receiving tax dollars through the Market Access Program. And corporate giants like Blue Diamond, Sunkist and California Raisins get the biggest financial boost. These companies have received more than $93 million in federal funding from MAP.

MAP – a $200 million a year program – is just one of many programs ingrained in farming legislation.

Fortunately the US Senate is looking at cutting some programs like MAP. Senator Tom Coburn, R-Okla. shares this concern: “The time has come to debate whether the federal government should be in the business of promoting private-market goods to foreign buyers.”

As the Farm Bill is up for debate in the US Senate, keep an eye out to see if the Senate can cut some of these programs.
