Tea Party Patriots Welcome Serious Budget Talks
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Tea Party Patriots, the nation’s largest grassroots organization, today welcomed President Obama’s calls for budget talks but chided him for waiting to weigh in on the issue. Last week, the organization held a “Continuing Revolution” rally near the U.S. Capitol featuring prominent Members of Congress and grassroots activists demanding serious cuts in the budget.
“The Tea Party Patriots welcome the President to the budget negotiating table,” said Mark Meckler, National Coordinator of the Tea Party Patriots. “His absence from these conversations for the past year has been deafening, and resulted in the country operating with no federal budget since 2009. The American people should remain skeptical when the President finally engages in the budget conversations on the same day he announces his re-election campaign. This nation is crying out for leadership—not more partisan posturing.”
The President is scheduled to meet with House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) and Rep. Hal Rogers (R-Ky). In announcing the meetings, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said, “Time is of the essence, and that is why he called this meeting for tomorrow.”
“If ‘time is of the essence,’ then why didn’t the President show leadership and call these meetings weeks ago,” said Jenny Beth Martin, National Coordinator of the Tea Party Patriots. “This fiscal crisis has been a long time coming, and passing a budget isn’t something unexpected. With the fiscal year already half-way over, the time is now to make the deep cuts required of a fiscally responsible government.”
Tea Party Patriots is a national grassroots coalition with more than 3,000 locally organized chapters and more than 15 million supporters nationwide.
