When it comes to identity, grassroots activists may think of ourselves as bound by many different things. The ideals of a democratic republic, for example. Or a political ideology. Some may believe in a higher power, and others in the influence provided by social and community organizations. Well, it turns out all of those answers are wrong. According to this video at the Democratic National Convention, the only thing we all have in common is… government.
Needless to say, the video is shameful and rather anti-climactic. Government? Really? We at the grassroots level are fighting for the future of America not because we are part of its government, but because we believe in the principles and ideals that made the people of America the most successful, wealthy, and dynamic the world has ever seen. Yes, government helped make all of this possible, but mostly because it kept itself limited in the roles it took on. Additionally, the ideals of this country, the values and founding principles of the nation, were not made possible by government. They were made possible, and successful, by people who limited government by those ideas and principles.
To be fair, it appears the video was not done by the Obama campaign. From a campaign aide:
“The video in question was produced and paid for by the host committee of the city of Charlotte. It’s neither an OFA nor a DNC video, despite what the Romney campaign is claiming. It’s time for them to find a new target for their faux outrage.”
The Executive Director of the Charlotte in 2012 Host Committee says the same thing:
The “Welcome to Charlotte” video was solely produced and paid for by the Host Committee’s New American City Fund, which promotes the city of Charlotte and welcomes our guests. The intent of this video was to tell the story of this region and it is completely unaffiliated with the Obama campaign or the Democratic National Committee.
While such clarification would normally be important, in this case it does not much matter. Much like the Romney campaign and the RNC, Obama for America controls what does and does not appear at the DNC. By allowing this video to be shown, Obama has attached himself to it, and given grassroots activists another reason to be concerned about how the founding principles of America seem to be disappearing.
