Tea Party Patriots Demand Mature Leadership and Action in Congress

Washington, DC – Today, the Tea Party Patriots criticized the U.S. Senate for passing a three-week spending bill designed to keep the government running after March 18, but does not address the debt ceiling or make cuts necessary to restore fiscal stability to the nation.

“This short-term ‘band-aid’ on a gaping wound does nothing to stop the flow of hard-earned dollars out of the taxpayer’s pocket into the government’s coffers,” said Jenny Beth Martin, national coordinator for Tea Party Patriots.  “Americans want to know where their leaders are.  Where are the courageous examples that can make tough decisions and stand behind them?  Who will step up and say ‘enough already, let’s do the hard thing and actually make meaningful cuts in spending?”

“Americans repeatedly say they want more than a short-term ‘punt’ on the spending issue,” said Mark Meckler, national coordinator for Tea Party Patriots.  “The measure does not defund even NPR, an organization whose leading fund raiser has openly stated does not need federal funds, nor does it fulfill the Republicans $100 spending cut pledge—a small but symbolic step in the road to fiscal responsibility.”

The three-week Continuing Resolution (CR) keeps the government funded for three weeks and cuts $6 billion in federal spending, mostly by eliminating earmarks (which the President has already said he will veto) and programs already targeted for reduction by President Obama in his fiscal 2012 spending request.

“For too long, politicians of both parties have chosen short term solutions to long term problems,” said Meckler.  “Until the elected leaders of this country develop the fortitude to undertake real spending cuts and serious entitlement reform, they are sending the message that our children and grandchildren do not matter.  We cannot kick the can down the road forever.”
