Over Recess, Tea Party Activists Visited Offices Nationwide to Push for Fiscal Responsibility
WASHINGTON, DC – As Congress returns from Easter recess Tea Party Patriots, the nation’s largest grassroots organization, called on Members in both Houses of Congress to oppose an increase in the debt limit, support the Full Faith and Credit Act and oppose any tax increases. Last week, Tea Party Patriots across the country visited the offices of 368 of the total 435 Representatives, and numerous Senators to demand that they ‘Deal in the District,’ not in the backrooms of Washington, and support these fiscally responsible actions.
“We hope that during their recess, Congress was able to see what their constituents face every day and hear their frustration with Washington backroom deals that mask our real crisis,” said Mark Meckler, national coordinator of Tea Party Patriots. “Now that they’re back, we urge them to deal openly with the voters. What does it mean to actually deal with your constituents? It means opposing a debt ceiling increase at a time when our credit card is maxed out. It means supporting the Full Faith and Credit Act which will insure that America pays our debt first so we don’t default. It means saying ‘no’ to tax increases, period. Tax increases at this stage in our economy will further slow the economic recovery.
“We can and will pay our debt with our immense tax revenue, but Congress must figure out what must be cut as a result. Further delay is simply unacceptable.”
“Americans want an open and honest debate in the coming weeks, not last-minute deals that cut what amounts to mere pennies in relation to our fiscal crisis,” said Jenny Beth Martin, national coordinator of Tea Party Patriots. “The U.S. could be nearing a collapse like Greece, but Washington’s response has been to do the same old thing: raise the debt ceiling and borrow more. This is simply unacceptable.
“The latest Rasmussen poll indicates 53 percent of Americans believe our best days are behind us. That may very well be if Members of Congress again refuse to listen to their constituents and again refuse to act. We’re calling on our leaders to actually lead.”
