White House spokesperson dodges questions about whether President Obama will attend Justice Scalia’s funeral
White House spokesman Josh Earnest Wednesday would not directly answer whether President Barack Obama will be attending Justice Antonin Scalia’s funeral service but did say the president and first lady will “pay their respects” when the former justice is lying in repose at the Supreme Court Friday.
“The president and the first lady on Friday will travel to the Supreme Court to pay their respects to Justice Scalia as he lies in repose there at the Supreme Court,” Earnest said. “I can tell you that Vice President Biden and Dr. Jill Biden will attend Justice Scalia’s funeral at the Basilica on Saturday.”
In 2005, Former President George W. Bush not only attended the funeral of Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist but also eulogized Rehnquist.
Earnest did not give any further explanation on why the Obama’s would be skipping the funeral on Saturday. He did say that it was an “important opportunity” for the president and the first lady to pay their respects to the late justice.
