Barone: Prez Laid Course For Border Mess
The flood of underage — and non-underage — illegal immigrants from Central America coming across the border in Texas is, to paraphrase a former Obama administration official, a “man-caused disaster.” The man who caused it, more than anyone else, is Barack Obama. Speaking at political fundraisers in Dallas and Austin last week — he refused to do a “photo-op” on the border: First things first — Obama placed the blame on House Republicans for not having passed a comprehensive immigration bill as the Democratic-majority Senate did in June 2013. But it wasn’t only Republicans who failed to pass such a bill. House Democrats didn’t pass one either in 2009 or 2010, when they had a bigger majority than Republicans have had in 80 years.
Michael Barone lays it on the line and exposes how the president brought us to this crisis.
Will Police Crack Down on Immigration Protesters?
Activists planning mass protests in cities across America this weekend say they don’t expect to see any overzealous police in riot gear. But just in case, they’re asking protesters to bring their video cameras and smartphones to the protests scheduled for July 18 and 19. They want everything, especially any interaction with police or with counter-protesters, to be documented on video…. The number of communities signed up to participate in the protests – dubbed the National Day of Protesting Against Immigration Reform, Amnesty & Border Surge – reached 291 as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, and organizers are expecting tens of thousands of people to join the protests…
Opposition to the president’s immigration policy shows no sign of slowing down; it’s still growing!
Pressure Builds on Obama For Decision on Employer Mandate
The White House needs to make a decision soon on whether ObamaCare’s controversial employer mandate will take effect in 2015. With the mandate set to take effect in January, businesses are awaiting final world from the administration on whether they will be required to track and report how many of their employees are receiving coverage. Federal officials are late in delivering the final forms and technical guidance necessary for firms to comply, raising suspicions that the mandate could once again be delayed.
Law of the land? Not the law of the land? This is no way to run a democratic republic.
Robert J. Samuelson: New Jobs But 90% Are Part-Time
There may be a dark lining to the sunny June employment report, which recorded an increase of 288,000 payroll jobs for the month. Most, or all, of the increase may have been part-time jobs. If that’s a trend, it could signal a weaker economy. It could also vindicate critics of the Affordable Care Act (the ACA or Obamacare). They have argued that the added costs of providing health insurance for full-time workers would cause many firms to emphasize part-time employment.
Welcome to Part-Time America! Where people have more time to be… broke.
