“One if by land, and two if by sea;
And I on the opposite shore will be,
Ready to ride and spread the alarm
Through every Middlesex village and farm,
For the country-folk to be up and to arm.”
One of my favorite poems as a kid was Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s Paul Revere’s Ride. It’s a wonderful piece of literature about an inspiring chapter in American history.
The words of Longfellow’s classic started swirling through my head Thursday night – I still know the first few stanzas by heart – but for all the wrong reasons.
I had just watched the video of a group of men landing a small watercraft on the shores of San Diego, jumping from their boat bobbing in the Pacific, clad in black clothes and caps, hustling up the beach. It vaguely resembled a SEAL Team V exercise. But these were not American warriors; these were illegal immigrants. The media said they were from Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador.
One if by land and two if by sea…
If Paul Revere was looking for a signal to warn his fellow Americans about illegal immigration, he’d see three lanterns hanging in the belfry of Boston’s North Church tower. We are being invaded by land and sea but the Obama Administration is content to do little to stop it. In fact, the President and his administration have gone out of their way to encourage it.
That’s why I am so excited about seeing the new Tea Party Patriots film The Border States of America, a documentary on the illegal immigration crisis. It’s currently in production and will be released later this fall. I’m excited because this movie will finally let millions of Americans see for themselves exactly what is happening to America.
Just about everybody is at least somewhat aware of illegal immigration. Many have read news reports about the problems it is creating. But relatively speaking, only a very small number of Americans have direct experience with the scourge of illegal immigration. The fact is, hardly anybody has actually seen first-hand what is going on.
That’s why this new movie is so important. The Border States of America will let people see exactly what is happening along our southern border. Just as important is what people will not see. They will not see a secure border with Mexico. They will not see policies to fully-empower law enforcement. They will not see an administration abiding by the rule of law.
Paul Revere is among the most notable of American icons. Few, if any, of us can presume to replicate his his sturdy courage and defiance of tyranny. But in a small way, each one of us can do something to “spread the alarm through every Middlesex village and farm,” about how this crisis threatens our nation.
You can host a viewing of The Border States of America. It might be in a community center, in your office or in your home. You can let your family, friends, neighbors and colleagues see for themselves the damage being caused by illegal immigration. As the movie is being readied for release, you’ll be able to get your own DVD copy of The Border States of America and we hope you’ll show it to as many people as possible.
Until then, take a few minutes to read Longfellow’s poem about Paul Revere. If you have kids or grandkids, turn it into a bedtime story. And as they hear about what one man did in the name of liberty in 1775, think about what you can do today.
