Tea Party Patriots Action’s Martin on Birthright Citizenship: “The amendment has been misinterpreted for decades.”

Tea Party Patriots Action Honorary Chairman Jenny Beth Martin, responding to President Trump’s decision to order by executive action that babies born in the United States to illegal immigrants will no longer be granted so-called “birthright citizenship,” today released the following statement:

“The right to U.S. citizenship is one of the greatest gifts to be found anywhere in the world, and is not to be granted lightly. The framers of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, acknowledging this, made clear their belief that only persons born or naturalized in the United States who were ‘subject to the jurisdiction thereof’ were to be granted U.S. citizenship. Sen. Lyman Trumbull of Illinois, one of the drafters of the amendment, clarified that ‘subject to the jurisdiction thereof’ meant ‘not owing allegiance to anybody else’ — that is, the parents were not citizens of another nation. Nevertheless, the amendment has been misinterpreted for decades, and has acted as a major magnet for illegal immigration. We strongly support President Trump’s decision to take executive action to correct this wrong and reassert the principle that citizenship is granted only to those born here whose parents are citizens or permanent legal residents.”
