#ObamacareMadness: Final Four Thoughts on True Reform

Stripping away all the legalese, the new healthcare law boils down to the usurpation of liberty and hindrance of free markets. It’s hard to imagine these are the values our Founding Fathers embraced. According to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, they are. In another moment of Obamacare Madness, the congresswoman audaciously invoked our founders to give further credence to the Affordable Care Act.

“There are those critics, bumps in the road, but they’ve only been turbulence. They have not been an obstacle to the American people having healthier life that our founders wanted for them,” she said.

Those founders wanted “life — a healthier life — liberty and the freedom to pursue their happiness, not [be] job-locked, but having benefits that having health-care policies that are portable, they could be self-employed, be a photographer — they could start their own business, they could change jobs, they could reach their aspirations.”[1]

Obviously, she is confusing the Declaration of Independence with the President’s declaration – or mandate – for healthcare. Neither Washington, Jefferson nor Madison would have approved of Obamacare. Believing there are principles that embody true healthcare freedom, Tea Party Patriots has highlighted nine marks of real healthcare reform [2] – four of them here:

“CONSTITUTIONAL: Real healthcare reform will improve our healthcare system while respecting all aspects of the constitution. The rights of Americans to make personal choices would be protected and valued. We envision a country where individuals and families can be free and healthy.

DEBT-FREE: Real healthcare reform will not add to the national debt or increase the deficit. Young people today and future generations tomorrow should be free to pursue their dreams instead of paying off the debt of previous generations. Additionally, real reform will save taxpayers money today, as well as individual patients and healthcare consumers.

FREE MARKET: Real healthcare reform will draw on the strengths of the free market by encouraging innovation and competition. Sincere healthcare reform will unleash the imaginations of innovators and finally allow healthcare providers to expand access and provide quality care for lower prices. To do this, we must look to the same place where iPhones, Kindles, and Twitter came from – the people, not the federal government. Let’s free up the private sector so it can do what it does best, solve problems. Sustainable healthcare reform equals real innovation and real job creation.

CHOICE: Real healthcare reform will increase choices for Americans by bolstering the free market and igniting innovation. Individuals and families should be empowered to make personal decisions about their health insurance and their health care services. We can only do this if the healthcare market is not artificially restricted by overbearing regulations. The healthcare system must be allowed to operate freely so that everyone has as many options as possible.”

While the Left wraps Obamacare in conservative words and sells it as “we nag you because we care”, it flies in the face of all that our founders intended. Coercion is not choice. Free markets don’t include bailouts. Thomas Jefferson said, “I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.” Obamacare fails this test.

With all due respect, Congresswoman Pelosi – it is the Washington elites, not George Washington or any other liberty-loving American, who want this law. At Tea Party Patriots, we desire to break free from the Obamacare Madness and enjoy true healthcare freedom.
