Shelby Blakely began volunteering with Tea Party Patriots in November of 2009 as an op-ed writer for TPP’s fledgling publication and now serves on the National Support team as the Journalist Coordinator. Before becoming politically active Shelby routinely organized church dinners, events, and produced regular newsletters for her congregation. She also ran a small farm.
Between marriage and family, Shelby’s history degree aspirations were remodeled and replaced with self-study. Despite listening to conservative talk radio since age 14, she never became politically active until she noticed blatant propaganda posing as legitimate news.
Seeing an opportunity promote objective reporting, she created Government Accountability News to offer training and mentoring and a platform to potential Tea Party journalists across the country. According to Shelby, “Journalism is my first love because you can either indict or exonerate someone simply by telling the truth.” She travels across the country to help regular citizens become members of new media, encouraging them to hold government accountable through tough and fair questioning.
Shelby’s favorite things to do besides politics are collaborating on fiction novels, boogie boarding, getting pounded by waves, learning about weapons, small-scale farming, and music.
Her favorite quote is: “Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear.”
