TEA PARTY PATRIOTS: Tea Party Group Teams With ACLU, NAACP On Patriot Act “Growing concerns about the Patriot Act’s renewal are creating strange bedfellows. The Tea Party Patriots and the ACLU are running TV ads urging Americans to “tell Congress [to] protect our privacy.” On top of that, the executive director of Iowa’s ACLU and Tea Party Patriots’ boss Jenny Beth Martin have coauthored an op-ed in the Des Moines Register on “the need for significant reforms to curtail government surveillance authorities, like some of those included in the Patriot Act.” And even the NAACP — which hasn’t always been kind to the tea party movement ...

TEA PARTY PATRIOTS: The FEC’s Internet gag rule (Op-ed by Jenny Beth Martin and Matt Kibbe) Liberals don’t want Americans speaking truth to power “…Just as Williams felled the Liberty Tree to frustrate debate, Ms. Ravel wants to bring the political discourse of freedom-loving Americans under her agency’s heavy-lidded purview with an eye to cutting it off. HEALTHCARE: Americans Are Spending 42 Percent More on Health Insurance Than They Did in 2007 “Data on consumer spending show that spending on health insurance surged 42 percent from 2007 to 2013, according to analysis by the Wall Street Journal. The rise reflects the increasing cost of health insurance and the Affordable Care Act’s requirement that everyone buy extensive health insurance. Another feature shown by the data is the movement away from home-ownership and associated costs. Families are more likely to rent than in 2007, so mortgage spending is down and rent spending is up. Some of the other categories where spending fell – ...

What “reform” looks like at the Pentagon

Via The Washington Post, a reality check on just how out of touch the Beltway is: Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Tuesday that he has ordered a 20 percent cut in the number of top brass and senior civilians at the Pentagon by 2019, the latest attempt to shrink the military bureaucracy after years of heady growth. Hagel’s directive could force the Pentagon and military command staffs to shed an estimated 3,000 to 5,000 jobs.
