FBI Director James Comey Tuesday announced the bureau will not recommend criminal charges be leveled at former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for transmitting state secrets via an unsecured, personal email server but did say that Ms. Clinton was “careless,” sending 110 emails then-considered classified.

“Although we did not find clear evidence that Secretary Clinton or her colleagues intended to violate laws governing the handling of classified information, there is evidence that they were extremely careless in their handling of very sensitive, highly classified information,” Mr. Comey says in his prepared statement.

Director Comey’s remarks were the culmination of a year-long investigation into Ms. Clinton’s homebrew email server, referred to the bureau by the Intelligence Community Inspector General, to determine whether the former secretary of state “improperly stored or transmitted on that personal system, in violation of a federal statute making it a felony to mishandle classified information either intentionally or in a grossly negligent way…”
