Crisis on the border
There is a crisis happening along our southern border right now. Tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors are pouring into the U.S. The numbers are staggering and overwhelming. In fiscal year 2011, an estimated 4,059 children from Latin America crossed into the U.S. illegally. In fiscal year 2013, that number was as high as 21,537. The Obama Administration is now claiming1 that 47,017 children have cross into the U.S. so far just this year.
By the end of the year, that number could rise again to 60,000, and double in 2015. On Monday, President Obama called the situation an “urgent humanitarian situation.” He’s right to call it “urgent,” but he offers little by way of solution. Instead of focusing on stemming the flow of illegal immigration, he appointed a federal coordinator to make sure the children are provided for.
The situation is overwhelming2 U.S. border security. In Texas, border officials are so overcome they are shipping busloads of children to Arizona. Yet Arizona children’s shelters are under enormous3 strain to keep track of the children who successfully crossed the border. Federal officials have rented space on a military base for 1,200 of these children, and they’re eyeing one more in California. The president has also directed Federal Energy Management Agency chief Craig Fugate to coordinate the effort.
The price tag for caring for these children isn’t cheap. The administration has asked Congress to approve $1.4 billion in taxpayer funds to care for the children and help them reach whatever family they have in the U.S.
Time and time again, President Obama and the Democratic Party have scoffed at the idea of securing our border. Instead, they have talked openly about amnesty and pathways to citizenship for the millions of illegal immigrants currently living in the U.S. Well, now the word has gotten out: immigration laws aren’t enforced in the U.S. States like Texas, Arizona and California are already feeling the strain. It’s only a matter of time before it spreads nationwide. It’s time to secure our border!
