President Obama, who doesn’t appear to care too much for Christmas, tried to impose a Christmas tree tax on those of us right-wing extremists who do.  President and First Lady Obama do not give Christmas presents to their daughters.  Also, the Obama White House Christmas (Holiday) tree last year was decorated with ornaments portraying the likeness of traditional Christmas figures such as Mao Tse Tung and drag queens.  Notice that Obama’s tax was not called a Holiday Tree tax.  Or a Winter Festival Tree tax.  Or an Any-Name-But-Christmas Tree Tax.  No, it was a Christmas Tree tax.  It seems in these politically correct times, the only time a liberal will mention the word ‘Christmas’ is if they’re slapping a tax on it!  After an uproar from conservatives, President Obama (aka ‘The Grinch’) decided to table the tax.  For the moment.

Here’s how the tax would work:

The 15 cent tax on each Christmas tree would have supported yet another government bureaucracy. David Shipman, Acting Administrator of Agricultural Management, would have appointed a Christmas Tree Promotion Board. The Federal Register says the Christmas Tree Promotion Board would be to run a “program of promotion, research, evaluation, and information designed to strengthen the Christmas tree industry’s position in the marketplace; maintain and expand existing markets for Christmas trees; and to carry out programs, plans, and projects designed to provide maximum benefits to the Christmas tree industry.”

Want to promote Christmas trees?  Have the government stop prohibiting the use of the term ‘Christmas tree!’  Is a new government bureaucracy really necessary to adequately promote Christmas trees?  How has Christmas survived this long without Washington bureaucrats helping hapless tree growers promote Christmas trees?  This is akin to having a Toddler Birthday Promotion tax that will remind young children to get excited about their upcoming birthdays.  Maybe a Respiration Reminder tax will be next to help forgetful Americans to remember to inhale and exhale periodically.  Maybe President Obama can create a Department of Breathing and fill it with tens of thousands of professional federal employees dedicated to the promotion of efficient breathing procedures!  With liberals in office, the possibilities for taxes and bureaucracies are endless!

America is stalled in a deep recession with an unemployment rate over 9 percent.  This year, our federal government will outspend revenues by $1.3 trillion.  Is a $.15 cent tax on Christmas trees really the best the Obama administration can do to remedy America’s tremendous problems?  If past performance is any indication, the probable answer is a qualified yes!

The Christmas Tree tax shows the deep disconnect our elected officials in Washington have with the American people.  Americans are tired of out-of-control government spending and wealth-strangling governmental regulations that unnecessarily and unwisely cost the private sector money and jobs.  So how does President Obama remedy these problems?  A tax on Christmas trees!  The ridiculous Christmas Tree tax is perhaps the perfect example of why Americans have such negative, but warranted,  feelings towards Washington.

As mentioned, the Christmas Tree tax has wisely been postponed.  There is no word, however, if tax credits will be granted under President Obama for the purchase of Mao Tse Tung ornaments!
