On Saturday, Breitbart News published a brief interview with former Alaska governor Sarah Palin. Governor Palin spoke about a variety of topics, but the following part of her first answer jumped out at me (emphasis added):

Short term: I encourage others to step out in faith, jump out of the comfort zone, and broaden our reach as believers in American exceptionalism. That means broadening our audience. I’m taking my own advice here as I free up opportunities to share more broadly the message of the beauty of freedom and the imperative of defending our republic and restoring this most exceptional nation. We can’t just preach to the choir; the message of liberty and true hope must be understood by a larger audience.

Governor Palin is exactly correct. Tea Party activists know this, which is why so many of us go to town halls. It’s why so many patriotic Americans write letters to the editor, publish press releases, and bring their opinions to a wide variety of audiences. It is fantastic for our movement that such a prominent figure is promoting this as well. Too often, Members of Congress, political operatives, and even grassroots activists look at those who disagree with them as enemies or opponents instead of future allies. This is why Republicans and Democrats so often try to split the nation between their respective voting blocs instead of winning support from a wide spectrum of Americans.

As Congress faces the three big budget battles of sequestration, Continuing Resolution, and debt ceiling over the next few months, the national staff of Tea Party Patriots has refined its own message. We’ve taken ideas that aren’t working and implemented new ones. We’ve made good strategies work better. As you do, we are always looking for ways to bring our message to the American people ever more effectively.

We don’t have to tell you how to change hearts and minds in your communities. After all, the Tea Party was founded upon the beliefs, creativity, and hard work of millions of Americans. We are seeing the results of this every week when Local and State Coordinators for Tea Party Patriots launch newsletters, e-mail blasts, organize protests, and do dozens of other creative activities to bring awareness of their goals to the general public.

Of course, the mainstream media is going to do its best to make Tea Party activists look crazy and un-American, or otherwise undermine and/or not report our efforts. But that’s old news, so keep following the sound advice of Governor Palin and keep up the great work.
