WATCH: Rep. Louie Gohmert Says ‘Stink’ Of IRS Management ‘Getting Overwhelming’

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) Tuesday during a House Judiciary Committee meeting expressed his “righteous indignation” over the lack of bipartisan uproar regarding allegations top-level IRS officials – specifically, IRS Commissioner John Koskinen – stonewalled and covered their tracks in order to cover up evidence IRS employees targeted Americans for their political beliefs. Western Journalism has the details: “The Internal Revenue Service is the only entity of which I’m aware in the federal government that can ignore the Constitution as part of its job — nobody else gets to ignore the Constitution,” the Republican congressman said ...

But the week before they left for the Memorial Day recess – excuse me, “District Work Period” – was chock full of fireworks, even though the House only voted on Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday of that week. The House came back to work on Monday, May 23, and moved to take up no fewer than 30 bills on the Suspension Calendar. Though most of them were the standard fare ...

CALENDAR: The House comes back into session on Monday, May 16, and will be in session through Thursday, with last votes expected no later than 3 PM. The Senate will return to session on Monday, May 16, and will be in session through Friday. But I’m going to skip most of what happened on the House floor last week, because the only thing of great significance that happened was the consideration and passage of a dozen and a half different but related measures, all dealing with various aspects of the nation’s ...

Did hundreds of Washington influencers stay mum about Hillary’s illegal email setup?

Dozens upon dozens of reporters, judges and congressional and White House staffers may have known about Hillary Clinton’s shady use of a private email server long before it became headline news. The Washington Times has the details: Listed on some of the more than 28,000 messages Mrs. Clinton released so far are several White House chiefs of staff and a former director of the Office of Management and Budget, much of the rest of official Washington, and a number of people who had oversight of the State Department’s key operations and open-records obligations. President Obama was also on a series of messages, though the government is withholding ...

IRS has been ‘bungling’ back taxes for more than two decades

The software used by the IRS to attribute payments to taxpayer accounts has had drawbacks for nearly two decades that could, if left unresolved, leave taxpayer data open to “increased risk of inappropriate and undetected use,” according to a Government Accountability Office report. The Washington Examiner has the details. Since at least the mid-1990s, the tax agency's software has been unable to attribute taxes received to the accounts of specific taxpayers who owed back taxes. Instead the IRS has employed a labor intensive statistical estimation process to track $9 billion in adjustments during Fiscal Year 2015, the report states. "Bas...

DOJ Drops Investigation Into Former IRS Official Lois Lerner Even Though IRS Abuses Persist

Officials at the Department of Justice last week announced that they are dropping their investigation into former senior IRS official Lois Lerner, who many allege spearheaded the IRS' slow-rolling of conservative groups' nonprofit applications. The Hill has the details: Republicans are blasting the Justice Department for declining to bring charges against IRS official Lois Lerner, the central figure of the Tea Party targeting scandal ... The DOJ said in a letter to Congress on Friday that it was closing its investigation of Lerner and only found evidence of “mismanagement” and “poor judgment,” which it added “is not a crime.”...

Neal B. Freeman: An Introduction

He may well be the most influential conservative you don’t know. History records that on the day he was born – the day after Independence Day, 1940 – a flotilla of British warships left England, dodging Nazi submarines in the north Atlantic, carrying almost $2 billion in gold bullion destined for safekeeping in the Bank of Canada. We can find no evidence that news of his birth had anything to do with Churchill’s decision to send gold abroad, but, well, a good scheme wouldn’t leave obvious clues like that, would it? Graduated from a Yale class that included two Nobel Laureates, a Pulitzer Prize winner, the architect of Ronald Reagan’s ...

News Briefing for Wednesday, June 3

TEA PARTY PATRIOTS: Patriot Act Renewal: Senate Overwhelmingly Votes To Proceed “…Conservative groups are arguing against McConnell’s amendments, and that could augur trouble in the House. So far, the USA Freedom Act has enjoyed unusual support from both tea party groups and the American Civil Liberties Union. “We support passage of the USA Freedom Act as passed by the House, and see no need whatsoever for these amendments which are obviously designed to weaken the bill,” Tea Party Patriots CEO Jenny Beth Martin said in a statement. “Simply put, if it is amended in the manner that the Majority Leader desires, we will be forced to ...
