A Health Care Hacking

We knew it was bound to happen sometime; we just didn’t know it would take the feds six weeks to discover it. The Wall Street Journal reported[1] Thursday that the Obamacare insurance website, HealthCare.gov, was hacked in July. But it took officials at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) until the end of August to discover the uploaded malicious software. Officials have been quick to assure the public that there is no evidence that consumers’ personal data was harmed during the security breach. They’ve also, unsurprisingly, tried to downplay the hacking as much as possible. One senior DHS official even said “If this ...

Washington Post Wonk Blog turns to hackery

Last week, The Washington Post’s Wonk Blog published a post by Ezra Klein on a new paper by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). From the post (emphasis added): What these three charts tell you is simple: It’s all about health care. Spending on Social Security is expected to rise, but not particularly quickly. Spending on everything else is actually falling. It’s health care that contains most all of our future deficit problems. And the situation is even worse than it looks on this graph: Private health spending is racing upwards even faster than public health spending, so the problem the federal government is showing in its budget project...

IRS backs off proposed regulation to collect charitable donors’ social security numbers

The Internal Revenue Service, after receiving tens of thousands of comments from concerned citizens, decided against implementing a proposed rule that would have authorized the agency to collect the social security numbers of donors who give $250 or more annually to a nonprofit charitable organization. The Hill has the inside story: “The Treasury Department and the IRS received a substantial number of public comments in response to the notice of proposed rulemaking,” the agency wrote Thursday morning in the Federal Register. “Many of these public comments questioned the need for donee reporting, and many comments expressed significant ...

Tea Party Patriots President Jenny Beth Martin in her latest column for The Washington Times weighs in on the IRS proposal to collect nonprofit donors’ social security numbers. The Washington Times has the details: It’s a thought that should send a chill up every American’s spine: The Internal Revenue Service wants to increase its already-expansive powers. Fresh off the IRS targeting scandal – in which the agency systematically brought its enormous power to bear to target conservatives for years – the IRS now wants new authority to ask 501(c)(3) charitable organizations to collect the Social Security numbers of donors who contribute ...

Who here wants elected officials to vote based on principles and convictions, regardless of the consequences?  Regardless of whether they will lose their chairmanships, committee appointments, and other perks of office? Who here is proud of Congressman Ken Buck for standing and voting on principle since he took office in DC in January? I’m proud of Ken Buck and the others who stood on principle and faced consequences in the last 2 weeks like Mark Meadows, Trent Franks, Cynthia Lummis, and Steve Pearce.  Thanks to you for making calls this week, the Republican “Leadership” reinstated Congressman Mark Meadows’ subcommittee chairmanship and ...

TEA PARTY PATRIOTS: Patriot Act Renewal: Senate Overwhelmingly Votes To Proceed “…Conservative groups are arguing against McConnell’s amendments, and that could augur trouble in the House. So far, the USA Freedom Act has enjoyed unusual support from both tea party groups and the American Civil Liberties Union. “We support passage of the USA Freedom Act as passed by the House, and see no need whatsoever for these amendments which are obviously designed to weaken the bill,” Tea Party Patriots CEO Jenny Beth Martin said in a statement. “Simply put, if it is amended in the manner that the Majority Leader desires, we will be forced to ...
