Our message to Hill Republicans: Double down on DHS!

Last week, the Senate voted to begin debate on a bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security before its funding runs out at the end of this month. And three times, Senate Democrats filibustered the bill because they object to language that would strip funding from President Obama’s executive amnesty [1]. Where are the Democrats’ priorities? Obviously, they’re not with funding the Department of Homeland Security. Our Republican leaders, to their credit, have stood firm on this bill. Senator Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is bringing up the version that passed the House. We want him to keep standing his ground, and send a very loud and ...

Democrats’ Obstructionism

This week, Senate Democrats more than dipped their toes in the obstructionism pool, they jumped completely in! For three days in a row, the Democratic caucus united behind blocking a bill [1] that passed the House of Representatives and would fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Their only problem with the bill is that it reverses President Obama’s unconstitutional executive order instituting de facto amnesty. The Department’s funding runs out at the end of this month. Meanwhile, of course, the Obama Administration is laying the groundwork to cast the blame of a potential DHS shutdown squarely at the GOP’s feet. On Monday, in ...

HEALTHCARE: Chuck Schumer: Passing Obamacare in 2010 Was a Mistake The Senate’s No. 3 Democrat says that his party misused its mandate. “Sen. Chuck Schumer upbraided his own party Tuesday for pushing the Affordable Care Act through Congress in 2010. While Schumer emphasized during a speech at the National Press Club that he supports the law and that its policies "are and will continue to be positive changes," he argued that the Democrats acted wrongly in using their new mandate after the 2008 election to focus on the issue rather than the economy at the height of a terrible recession. "After passing the stimulus, Democrats should have ...

HEALTHCARE: Burwell: We Need To Give Obamacare To DREAMers “Health and Human Services chief Sylvia Burwell made an appeal for immigration reform and extending Obamacare benefits to DREAM-eligible illegal immigrants on Tuesday while promoting the health-care law. Burwell was touting the upcoming Obamacare enrollment period, which begins Saturday, on a webcast with several Latina bloggers when she stepped outside her typical domain and advocated for a change in immigration policy. “DREAMers are not able to be covered in the marketplace,” Burwell said in response to a question about whether families with mixed immigration statuses can get ...

White House Ignores Own Advice on Corporations

After months of railing against corporations seeking friendlier tax climates overseas, the White House is being questioned about granting a multi-million dollar contract to a company doing exactly that. “Accenture was awarded a contract in January that's now grown to well over $100 million to make improvements to HealthCare.gov, the federal enrollment portal that has caused a slew of headaches for President Obama. The company is currently incorporated in Ireland, where it moved in 2009. Before that, Accenture had set up shop in both Switzerland and Bermuda, a noted tax haven, and has been called a tax dodger by a variety of mostly Democratic ...

Wheel of Misfortune: Seniors Reeling from New Medicare Cuts

Proposed cuts to Medicare Advantage, released late February, triggered a flurry of predictions of how it will affect the nearly 16 million seniors, who rely on the government’s privately run health plans. Becker’s Hospital Review highlights four of them.   “Kaiser Health News reported government officials said the rates could mean payment reductions of 1.9%, while an unidentified insurance industry official estimated the reductions would total 6%. RT Capital analyst Sheryl Skolnick told Reuters the proposed rates appeared to equal 6 to 7% in cuts, and AHIP has reported the cuts would total 5.9% if finalized.” [1]   For ...

Two strikes against President Obama’s “recess” appointments

Back in January, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit found the President’s “recess” appointments of three National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) members, as well as the head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, were anything but. As Tea Party Patriots explained at the time: Pro forma sessions are essentially mini-sessions, where Congress is only in session for a few seconds or minutes. No legislative work is done. They are held every few days in order to prevent a President from declaring recess appointments, as was the case in 2012. As the Court rightly found, the President’s appointments did not take place in a congre...

Will newly-unveiled EPA standards help or hurt gas prices?

From the agency trying to push gas to $7 a gallon: Bill Becker, of the National Association of Clean Air Agencies, said, "It is the single most important air pollution control strategy that President Obama will likely offer in his second term as president." The Environmental Protection Agency is expected to announce the proposed rules on Friday. The goal is to cut down on pollution by reducing the amount of sulfur in gasoline by two-thirds. Lives are apparently at stake as well: The White House says the price of gas will go up less than a penny, but the oil industry says it could rise as much as 9 cents a gallon. The new regulations won't take ...
