Urgent: Call your Senators today!
CALL YOUR SENATORS NOW
Yesterday, Tea Party activists across the country stood for the Constitution, the rule of law, and an open and transparent Congress. The results were astounding. Here are a few stories from the ground:
According to one activist, about 20 people stood in a thunderstorm in front of Speaker Boehner’s office, receiving support from passersby the entire time.
Another activist shared with us how she stood in front of Senator Sherrod Brown’s (D-OH) office handing out flyers, and someone likely on the opposite end of the political spectrum engaged in a discussion with her. By the time the conversation was over, Tea Party Patriot Amy Brighton and the man may not have agreed on guns or immigration…but they agreed that not reading bills of all kinds undermines America’s representative government. As Amy put it later in an e-mail, “It’s about changing hearts and minds of those in office as well as those who put the elected officials in office.”
Nine counties sent 50 activists to Senator Pat Toomey’s (R-PA) office in Johnstown, PA. According to Dave Noll, newspapers and TV stations showed up, and Senator Toomey’s regional manager defended the First Amendment rights of activists against the building’s owner, who wanted them to leave. Interestingly, the regional manager was (to quote Dave) “blind-sided with the Manchin-Toomey amendment and knew nothing about it until Monday!”
Perhaps most importantly, the actions of activists forced Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) to send this letter to Tea Partiers across the nation. The letter attempted to assure activists there would be transparency in the immigration debate, and that at least two hearings would be held to discuss the 1,500 page bill currently being worked on.
You have all done great work, and the nation is better for it. But the battle is not over! Later today, the Senate is aiming to vote on amendments to a gun bill that would restrict your rights to self-defense. Call your Senators and let them know you stand for the right to bear arms, and for the Constitution. It looks like they may not have the votes necessary to pass the final bill, but it’s close – your call can make the difference!
On immigration, the news is still not good. Senator Rubio was able to push back the hearings on the immigration bill, and get one more hearing – largely thanks to outside pressure – but as Mary Katharine Ham put it:
My skepticism of this bill comes…more from my utter lack of confidence that Congress can manage or even understand complex systems that it’s been spending the last half a century making more and more complex. In light of that concern, one hearing is better than none and two is better than one, but I still have very little confidence that anyone understands the current system in full or can accomplish what would need to be done to make it simpler and fairer.
The Senator says the process to get an immigration bill that can pass will take weeks or months, but as it stands now, concerns are valid that your Senators will not get the time to read and understand the bill before action is taken. As Tea Party Patriots National Coordinator Jenny Beth Martin pointed out to Brietbart.com:
“Sen. Rubio has quickly forgotten how the rest of the country views a 1,500-page bill that is deliberately being rushed through Congress,” Martin said. “He may be aware of details in the bill but the rest of the Senators, and certainly the American public, are not. He thinks he may be thoroughly educated on how the sweeping legislation will affect every facet of our lives, and on the consequences of his proposed changes, but he cannot be. It’s simply too large an undertaking for him to have already fully analyzed all of the ramifications of this bill.”
Patriots, this is where our battle lies today – stopping Congress from passing legislation it is unaware of. TARP, the stimulus, Obamacare, Dodd-Frank…this is how they passed. It is unacceptable for Congress to continue to engage in this dishonest and misrepresentative process.
Call your Senators today. Tell them to return to an open, transparent legislative process so we the People can actually be represented. Tell them to do it because the future of our nation relies on following the Constitution, and until a bill is entirely understood nobody can know if it follows the Constitution.
In short, tell them to do it because it’s right and just – and that you will hold them accountable.
