#DCintervention Toolkit: Letter to Speaker Boehner
April 16, 2013
The Honorable John Boehner
Dear Speaker Boehner:
Our country’s deliberative legislative process has been eroded, and sadly those in Washington are to blame. For at least the last four years, we’ve watched the Congress and Senate pass egregious legislation through dubious means in order to ensure quick passage. We need to look no further than the Affordable Care Act and its ill effects on American families and businesses to see the devastating consequences of Congress not willing to do its job and do the due diligence needed to ensure that our freedoms are protected.
What has transpired in the Senate over the last few weeks further confirms that Washington is more concerned about solidifying its power, rather than preserving the process our Founding Fathers created.
- Just last Thursday a piece of gun control legislation was moved forward even though the text of the bill was written by a very small group of people behind closed doors, and wasn’t released until hours after the vote. That means that the most deliberative body in the world voted to proceed on a bill that no one had read.
- Currently, the “Gang of 8” is writing another large piece of legislation behind closed doors, with the members of the gang publicly saying they want passage to occur quickly in order to stymie any opposition – even if that opposition comes from their constituents and the American people. This bill is already rumored to stand at 1,500 pages; only one hearing will be held; no amendments will be allowed. An overhaul of our immigration system will affect no less than our jobs, spending, culture, welfare system, education, security, etc., and the Gang of 8 insists on doing it swiftly, without transparency, and without the consent of the governed.
It is unquestionably shameful that so many in Washington are willing to work in secrecy and lock the American people out of the legislative process, which undermines our representative democracy.
So, the question is: how are you going to act, Speaker Boehner? Are you going to demand a transparent, deliberative process that ensures the voice and the will of the people are heard and represented, or are you going to allow another Obamacare-like monstrosity to happen on your watch? The choice is yours.
As your constituent, I am directing you to stop this madness and stand up for me – not the lobbyists, the special interests, the Party or any power-at-be. I want you to represent me by insisting on a public and deliberative process when writing, debating, and passing legislation.
If you do not, I will fight you every step of the way because I will fight for our Constitution, our representative democracy, our freedom, and against the nexus of power that seeks to use unethical, unrepresentative, unconstitutional processes to disenfranchise and oppress the American people. DC, has a problem. Now, what you going to do about it?
