#DCintervention Toolkit: Letter to Senator Rubio
April 16, 2013
The Honorable Marco Rubio
As your constituent, I am writing to you today because I am appalled at the flagrant lack of representation, process, and deliberation that the US Senate has displayed for at least the last four years. The “world’s most deliberative body” is anything but. Think of the last few years.
- It took the Senate over 4 years to pass a proper budget while the people were shut out, resulting in one manufactured crises after another, which was then used to justify runaway spending.
- The Affordable Care Act was a nearly 3,000-page bill that nobody bothered to read before voting yes. We must now suffer the consequences of that ignorance. With the “Gang of 8” following the same procedure on the immigration bill, how do you expect a different outcome?
- Last week a piece of gun control legislation moved forward though the text of the bill, written by a small group of people behind closed doors, wasn’t released until hours after the vote. You voted against this travesty, as it made a mockery of our entire legislative process. Thank you.
- However, your “Gang of 8” is writing a 1,500-page bill behind closed doors, with some publicly saying they want passage to occur quickly in order to stymie any opposing views. We are told one hearing will be held, and no amendments will be allowed. If this bill is so flawless that no amendments need to be added, the bill should be held up far and wide, letting all Americans see it. The outcome will affect our jobs, spending, culture, welfare system, education, security, etc., yet it’s being moved forward swiftly, without transparency, and without the consent of the governed. You have an opportunity to stop the steamroller, but so far you have not.
These are but a few recent examples of how the Senate is undermining our Constitution and representative democracy. Frankly, your vote against the gun control bill notwithstanding, you and your “gang” are a part of the problem. Do you remember that you were sent to DC with the support of the tea party and grassroots conservatives? You promised to change things, and that “never again” would we suffer from Obamacare-like legislation being shoved down our throats. We elected you to represent us, not to rule over us like emperors. How is this representation when bills pass with no text, when there are few or no hearings, and negotiations take place on a “booze cruise” on one Senator’s yacht?
As your constituent and your employer, I demand that you represent me. I want a public and deliberative process when writing, debating, and passing legislation. If you do not comply, I will fight you every step of the way because I will fight for our Constitution, our representative democracy, our freedom, and against the nexus of power that seeks to use unethical, unrepresentative, unconstitutional processes to disenfranchise and oppress the American people. DC, you have a problem, and right now Sen. Rubio, you are at the epicenter. Where is the Marco Rubio I voted for?
