Speaker Boehner “absolutely trusts” his opposition

Yesterday, on ABC’s “This Week,” Speaker Boehner (R-OH) said two things that do a disservice to the American people. First, he said he and the President “trust each other,” and a moment later said “Absolutely” when asked if he trusted the President, saying “there is no issue there.” Second, he said the debt “is not an immediate problem.”
There are many reasons the Speaker shouldn’t even be thinking these things, let alone saying them. Here are four:
1. The President is not trustworthy. He has been dishonest on the alleged need to raise taxes, the alleged harm the sequester will do to the American economy, and he has been dishonest on Fast & Furious and Benghazi, among other things. By saying he trusts the President, the Speaker is giving a false impression to the American public, and more ammunition for the mainstream media to praise the President as being an allegedly reasonable partner in future debt and deficit negotiations.
2. The debt is a problem right now. Consider the now-famous report showing a debt-to-GDP ratio of 90% or greater (America is over 100% of debt as compared to GDP) slows economic growth by about 1.7% annually when compared to nations debt levels between 60% and 90% of GDP.
What does this mean in practical terms? If America had possessed its current level of debt (as compared to GDP) from 1970 through 2010, the nation’s GDP would have been cut almost in half. This is the future America currently faces – a distinction Tea Party Patriots National Coordinator Jenny Beth Martin made clear in her speech at CPAC on Saturday.
3. The debt is also a problem right now because, as the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) noted in February, even under current law (the politically unrealistic, and fiscally optimistic, method of budget analysis the CBO uses for part of its budget projections), which includes tax increases and sequestration:
…[F]ederal debt held by the public is projected to remain historically high relative to the size of the economy for the next decade. By 2023, if current laws remain in place, debt will equal 77 percent of GDP and be on an upward path, CBO projects (see Summary Figure 1).
And later in the report:
If the amount of debt held by the public remains so large, federal spending on interest payments will increase substantially when interest rates rise to more normal levels. Because federal borrowing generally reduces national saving, the stock of capital assets, such as equipment and structures, will be smaller and aggregate wages will be less than if the debt were lower. In addition, lawmakers will have less flexibility than they ordinarily might to use tax and spending policies to respond to unanticipated challenges. Moreover, such a large debt poses an increased risk of precipitating a fiscal crisis, during which investors would lose so much confidence in the government’s ability to manage its budget that the government would be unable to borrow at affordable rates.
Is the debt a problem right now? Economic reality and the CBO seems to think so.
4. Finally, the debt is a problem because of expected future deficits. Were America to have its current GDP and only a $1 trillion debt, we would have a faster-growing economy that could absorb more of the crushing debt obligations from Social Security, Medicare, pensions, and other programs coming our way. Interest rate payments would be lower, as would future interest rates – payments that are also expected to skyrocket, around the same time Social Security and Medicare costs are projected to rise dramatically, about a decade from now.
Later on, the Speaker critiqued the President, saying that while he agreed the debt isn’t a problem right now, he added, “It is a looming crisis that requires immediate attention.” Tea Party Patriots agrees with the Speaker on this point, but it is disturbing that he is ignoring, or does not understand, the clear fiscal and economic realities that come from today’s level of debt. It is even more disturbing that he places his trust in President Obama, who has all but ignored America’s fiscal situation. Statements like this are one of the many, many reasons Speaker Boehner has “trust issues” within his own conference and the Tea Party at large.

Boehner, you are a fool to think the debt is not an immediate crisis and continue to pander to obama and the dems spending spree. You should step down as Speaker and let someone with balls take control of the house. I used to support you but now am just embarrassed by your lack of conviction for conservative principles.
The speaker of the house needs to be removed and someone who understands the political climate to be installed as speaker. Too much pandering, being weak-kneed, and having no intestinal fortutude to work through the Washington DC BS.
I don’t know what you mean by the “political climate”. What is unique about the current political climate which dictates that Boehner should be replaced?
Boehner needs to be replaced today. I can’t believe he is this dumb to trust Obama without question. WE must have better, more trust worthy representatives in D.C. Annie
Boehner needs to step down. This latest idiocy is just another indicator that he is not,up to the task of providing a strong opposition to Obama and representing the majority of Americans who believe we are in deep fiscal trouble and heading the wrong way. If he really believes that our massive debt is not a serious issue to be dealt with immediately he is on the wrong side of the aisle.
I am very worried about my future and especially my childrens future with the debt this country is in, the pro big government, and the entitlement mentality that nearly half the citizens in this country seem to be for. Its time to take this country back to what our Fore Fathers had always intended “For The People By The People” !!!!
Not to worry, Mark. You’re just suffering the effects of the hysteria Fox News and crazy right-wing bloggers seek to whip people into. Turn off the TV and the computer, spend more time outside, and before you know it you’ll be back in touch with the real world.
Monty,
I’m moved by your effort to assuage Mark of his concerns. However, your sage advice causes me to ponder whether or not you practice what you preach.
BOEHNER IS A PROGRESSIVE REPUBLICAN. PROGRESSIVE IS ANOTHER WORD FOR COMMIE.
thats right monte! lets all just bury our head in the sand and allow obama and all of his commie buddies including boner to take over and wreck the constitution and this country! get off this website u idiot!!!!
edsherrard,
I attempted the following reply to Monty.

I’m uncertain if my comment will post, as I received the following message…Your comment is awaiting moderation. While my instincts agree with your reply to him, I believe we should welcome his ilk. How else can we better contrast our views and opinions to people that think like him?
I see no mention of the billions of dollars wasted on interest because of the debt.
Boehner is an embarassment to every right thinking person. He should not have been reelected to be speaker. He needs to be replaced by the voters of Ohio in 2014.
Boehner needs to go, he’s much more interested in being speaker than he is in doing the job that needs to be done. We are beyond it being an immediate problem, we are in real trouble……..
My hunch is Speaker Boehner and President Obama are role playing. Not unlike Mary Matalin and James Carville.

Birds of a feather flock together?
EVERY politician in DC is role playing. They try to guess who their “constituents” are, then they tell them what they want to hear, but the people REALLY calling the shots are the major industrial entities and their lobbyists.
Looks like Boehner is the same sell out as RAND PAUL, yeah, you read that right. Paul just declared he now supports amnesty of illegal immigrants. He said that in a speech in front of latinos which he partially held in Spanish. So much for learning our language. I think the Tea Party has a serious problem with vetting its candidates properly.
As far as I am concerned, I will never ever support Rand Paul again.
Steve – Yup he wants to give amnesty to illegals! Can you believe that? I never trusted Rand Paul. It says a lot when his son was arrested for assault in a drunken rage on a commercial flight.
Everyone was so proud for his 12+ hour filibuster on possible hellfire missile drone attacks on American citizens. The whole thing was a publicity stunt in my eyes.
Do you have a solution to the problem? Do you want to round up 11 million people and throw them out?
“Our language?” English may be the preferred language most people living in this nation but last time I checked there is nothing in the Constitution defining “our language”. Nor do I think that “the Constitution was written in English” has any legal basis. If our founders wanted us to have an official language they would have made codified it.
BOEHNER needs to go seems to be on the wrong side of America’s needs.
Something to consider, “immigrants” A new group of Americans who come to this
nation to work hard and raise a family and pay the bulk of the taxes.
All US American citizens born here after 1776, and any relatives of these citizens living here today have the most at stake, as well as the most right to be involved in the future of (this) our nation.

We need Allen West to be the speaker.
Allen West would be perfect! A real lunatic Republican rather than just a wanna be like most.
