Fiscal conservatism breeds balanced budgets

Take it away, Mary Katharine Ham:
Gov.-elect Mike Pence of Indiana will go into office with a sunny fiscal outlook:
With a $500 million budget surplus and $2 billion in reserves, Indiana Governor-elect Mike Pence has pledged to give back some of that money when he takes office next week by cutting personal income taxes.
“An across-the-board tax cut for all Hoosiers would send a strong signal that we are managing our funds wisely and also reducing the tax burden on our taxpayers and businesses,” the former U.S. Congressman said while campaigning to replace outgoing fellow Republican Mitch Daniels as governor.
A few more:
Iowa is looking at an $800 million surplus. Florida’s is more than $400 million. Michigan, which was in a recession years before the country entered one in 2007, has an extra $1 billion in its general funds.
I can’t help but think these states have something in common. What is it? Daniels/Pence, Brandstad, Scott, Snyder. Hmmm.
And, it turns out budgeting sanely can actually allow states to help cope with new health care costs:
In Tennessee, Republican governor Bill Haslam has said that much of the state’s $580 million surplus is already spent. Obamacare is expected to increase enrollment in TennCare, the state’s Medicaid program, by more than 60,000 Tennesseans.
California claims it may come in even or with a surplus this year thanks to Gov. Jerry Brown’s tax hike, but California is also utterly drowning in insane amounts of debt, so I’m not sure they get credit for this maybe-surplus. But I’m sure our intellectual betters on the left will continue to tell us their model is the future of the nation.
On Wednesday, Tea Party Patriots highlighted Texas’ success in growing its economy through the principles of low taxes, low spending, and freer markets. As Katharine Ham reports, similar success stories are happening across the country as fiscal conservatives implement sound public policy. Meanwhile, states that continue to overspend – states like long-suffering California – continue to sag under the weight of massive debt, and as they raise taxes their citizens are departing for greener and more economically safe pastures.

The NRA says it “will not allow law-abiding gun owners to be blamed for the acts of criminals and madmen”

The National Rifle Association didn’t waste time making nice, releasing a statement Thursday afternoon blasting the White House shortly after it emerged from talks with Vice President Joe Biden. The group said members of Biden’s task force on gun violence are only focusing on ways to restrict gun ownership. “We were disappointed with how little this meeting had to do with keeping our children safe and how much it had to do with an agenda to attack the Second Amendment,” the NRA said. Although the task force led by Biden insisted it wouldn’t prejudge any proposal, it “spent most of its time on proposed restrictions on lawful firearms owners—honest, taxpaying, hardworking Americans.”
Somewhat off topic, but of critical importance:
Vice President Joe Biden says Obama will issue an edict to the population enacting gun control as if he has the authority to write his own laws.
Does this formally begin Obama’s rebellion against the Constitution and the government of the United States?
DB – NRA says we should put armed guards at every single school. That’s 100,000 schools. Who is going to pay for this? They should make the parents pay the cost. I don’t want to pay anymore in taxes!
The rebellion won’t start till late January. Once he bans all guns and crossbows he can declare anyone with a gun to be a criminal. Since there will be many, many millions of these
he will open up the FEMA camps to hold gun owners during reeducation. To avoid killing the economy with so many millions in camps Obama will throw open the borders to Mexico to get replacement workers.
I’ve been listening to the NRA yell about having people’s guns taken away for too many year. NO ONE every suggested that. But who cares about the truth the hype is too good to pass up.
Diane – fear mongering is a basic campaign and product advertising tool. Why wouldn’t the NRA leadership use it maintain their money and power?
Job creators will love it because they can pay the Mexicans less money and benefits.

The danger isn’t so obvious as to be disarming a population. The danger is making that population defenseless against any whim of government, and setting the precedent of the president being able to write his own whim into law. If Obama is allowed to write his own law in direct violation of text in the Constitution, there is no limit to what he will be able to do afterward.
We are witnessing the establishment of a fascist dictatorship no different than when Hitler was allowed to come to power in Germany. The Nazis were consumed with hatred and motivated to seek revenge. The Democrats are consumed with hatred and motivated to seek revenge. There is no difference between the two.
