12 Days of Solutions, Day 4: Downsize Government

Today is Day 4 of the 12 Days of Solutions. We’ve talked about the Penny Plan and tax cuts. Yesterday we highlighted the Heritage Foundation budget plan, which aims to Save the American Dream.
Today, we are going to focus on downsizing government across the board. There are multiple organizations dedicated to this goal, but few are more thorough than the libertarian Cato Institute.
According to Downsizinggovernment.org, a project of Cato, the federal government can downsize pretty much every department and agency in existence. Here are a few examples:
- According to Cato, the Department of Transportation spent $90 billion in Fiscal Year 2011. Cato recommends cutting all but a few billion of this spending, and writes “[T]he most important thing is to end federal subsidies for transportation activities that would be better handled by the states and private sector.”
- Cato outlines of over $131 billion out of a FY2011 budget of over $142 billion.
- Almost 18% of the Defense Department’s non-war spending would be cut over the next decade if Cato’s suggestions were followed.
- Cato suggested $81 billion in non-Medicare and Medicaid cuts in 2010. While this would not make a significant dent in long-term entitlement costs, it would help push off the day of fiscal reckoning.
These and other suggestions aren’t even being discussed in most Washington circles, yet they are necessary to the future of America. Right now, Washington is instead talking about raising your taxes. Apparently, the hard-earned income of average Americans doesn’t belong to us… but instead to the special interests that have long controlled D.C.

Medicare Part giving billions to the drug companies while we seniors paid more for drugs. Hank Paulson and his bailout to Wallstreet without a penny due back to the tax payers. Take some time and do a little research, and find out for yourself some of the crazy things that our Federal tax dollar are being wasted upon. Then check out the Constitution and see for yourself where it authorizes our Representatives and Senators to spend our money on such things, even if some of these of are things worthwhile. Unless you educate yourself, then your government will keep helping itself to the money that you worked for and earned.
Speakthetruth…. Bush, even with two wars… never had deficit above 450 billion… Obama on the other hand has never had a deficit under $1,200 billion. The problem is Obama and the Democrats and their out of control spending. Harvard did a study… they found that those that consider themselves liberals/progressives/socialists/democrats… have an average IQ of just 87… that’s only 8 points above the definition of retarded… go figure. Now we know why they make such stupid statements.
Sorry to put a hole in your boat, but an IQ of 70 is the cut off for mental problems not 79 as you suggest.
We have a ‘Revenue Problem’ because a huge government takes too much in taxes from and over regulates the private sector so businesses can not afford millions of more well paid workers that would pay much more in taxes than can be taken directly from businesses. Businesses do not pay taxes as they pass all costs to the customer as higher prices. Those high prices prevent fair competition with foreign companies so even more jobs (potential taxpayers) leave the US. Look at the FairTax Plan for your solution to an economy that can’t support your government.

Take a look at the current issue of the Journal of Accountancy…copy from my CPA takes exactly the opposite view of your assertions. EVERYONE, including the “middle class” making $45,000 and above is going to have taxes increase, from the child credit for families, to caps on mortgage interest deductions for your primary home, and so on.
This administration has made bald-faced lies about how the middle class “will not have its taxes increased, only the “rich” making over $250,000.” Family farms worth $1M and above are now going to be subject to a 55% estate tax which is going to affect 526,000 such farms across the country. Most of that value is in land, buildings, and equipment, and many are going to have to sell them to pay off this tax, after paying on their land, buildings, and equipment for decades already. This is “fair?”
Finally, the oft-repeated saw about taxing the “rich” more. If you take a look at published statistics, for the past three decades, you will see that the tax system in place today is very progressive and that the top 10% of taxpayers are already paying roughly NINETY SEVEN PERCENT of all taxes collected. The top 5% are paying FIFTY NINE PERCENT already.
The proposed increase in taxes for the rich won’t even make a tiny blip in our deficit. Only spending cuts, meaningful and across the board, are going to save this country, so you had best re-consider your rant.
By the way, this is not a political rant. It is, however, reality.

The Cato Institute receives 80% of it’s funding from individual donations.
Unlike most of your “progressive” organizations (like unions), CATO is required by law to keep track of where it’s money comes from.
Let’s talk about where unions get all the money they funnel into Democrats campaign coffers- surely you don’t believe it all gets willingly donated into the union PACs, as the law requires? No, they just use regular union dues, money that, also by law, is supposed to be used for contract negotiations and administration. The union “members” get no say in it at all.
One area of abuse of government funds is the HUD operation. I was told that in a Harvard Business Review article it stated that if all overlapping projects and general waste was eliminated that evey homeless or under housed family could have a $200,000 home! Furthermore, all homeless individuals could be fully housed.
I’ve spent some time investigating this matter because, as a disabled person, I see so many seniors and disabled dependent on public housing abused. If there is a dispute or civil rights complaint in one of its projects it finances HUD is also judge and jury with DOJ referring these matters back to HUD.
Talk about waste in the “safety net”, if this were eliminated more constructive assistance could be provided at the state level.

The Republican party left the conservatives out in the cold, They just got up and left and are continuing to march “Left.” Note, we did not leave them, they left us. They left our values, they left our platform, they forget we exist when it comes to casting their vote in government. In fact, I believe they wish true conservatives would just fall off a cliff somewhere. And I think it is long past time for conservatives to leave the Republican Party. Soooo… what would be wrong with making the Tea Party a real, registered party? Liberals (Socialists) are already scared spitless of the implications and policy, hopes and dreams, and the power and support behind the Tea Party. That alone makes me hunger and yearn for such an action. So what is stopping us, that is a Party I could support.

Usually I agree about 70% of whats said in a comment , but I have to say I agree with you at 100%, There are several agency that need to be cut entirely, an some that need to be cut at least 80%, Like a flat tax, and do away with IRS, do away with most if not all of the EPA. we can live with out National Labor Relations Board. Do away with Tenure, do your job or else. Do away with all the Zar’s That Obama has appointed. There are probably Thousands of different committees and etc., that can be done away with. I know that there would be an increase in the unemployment lines, but with the money we would be saving not having to pay them and support the different programs the have, we would be way ahead.

This is not down sizing……..down sizing would be. eliminating Ed, EPA, Fed, TSA, Homeland Defense, HUD, Freddie & Fannie MAC, IRS, Agri., HHS, DOE, 25% cut in pay & benefits for ALL Congress and President/Vice-President. END Foreign Aid to every Muslim country & cut the rest by 25%, except Israel. Take the United States completely OUT of the UN, close the doors and sell the buildings. STOP ALL subsidies, Cut each of these departments into four quarters and eliminate them a quarter a year, by the end forth year they would not exist at the Federal level.

I would settle for a requirement that you can only vote if you have “skin in the game” (pay income tax.)
Herein lies the rub. We will keep our morals and standards (and should). But, we will not make alliances with people we agree with only 80 or 90 percent. On the other hand, leftists/progressives will align with muslims to defeat conservatives. Their entire ‘base’ is a bunch of extreme single issue disparate groups banded together for one goal, destroy America. After they have done that, then they will go back to fighting each other. If these wacky people could keep their wacky ideas (like property ownership to vote) to themselves we could actually form a coalition.
The second propblem I see is incrementalism. The progressives have been very patient and have been working their plans for about 100 years. They never give up, even after defeat upon defeat. Meanwhile, on ‘our side’; if a candidate is not 100% in agreement with someone’s ideas or values, they stay home and not vote, like 4 million people did between 08 and 12. We will either stand united, or divided we shall fall.
I would run for Pres. who has a billion bucks to donate?

I still like the Mac-Penny-Plan. Reduce spending for 2013 by one penny for each dollar spent last year. Then do that again, each year, until Federal Government spending equals the money we send them, Taxes.

All the conservative pundits and various TP groups need to stop the class warfare against those who need help because there are no jobs, the handicapped, the disabled, those who work and still can not make enough to meet their monthly family expenses, the retired who are living on limited incomes, all those who do the best they can, can not find safe affordable housing, and are facing raising energy/food/clothing expenses in an economy they did not create. Then there are the single working people with children who are not eligible for welfare, possibly have food stamps and no one takes responsibility to ensure their court ordered child support is paid in a regular or timely basis. They account for 75% of the families who fall under poverty guidelines. Do a small percentage of the bottom half of the population have an entitlement mentality. Yes, but as long as you wage war on all of them because of maybe 5 or 10% of the population you will lose. Why not make men equally responsible for the children they father. Why not acknowledge that as long as society shuns the handicapped or blames them for being less than perfect therefore incompetent there is an issue of how they can support themselves. Laws cannot change that issue. Credits will not solve that issue. How can a handicapped person find a safe apt on 800.00 a month. What to do about the mentally ill. Are you comfortable that the majority live on the streets because that is the least restrictive environment and liberals are quite happy that they receive no treatment for their illness. The main thing to do at this time which won’t happen is term limits in the House and Senate. Keep them moving out and new people moving in. The Tea Party or a Third Party, liberal or conservative, is not going anywhere, Our politicians are bought in both parties. The candidate who raises and spends the most money wins. what does that tell the middle class American? If the Tea Party is honorable, they can’t win because they can’t be bought by special interest. We cannot give in on control of the debt ceiling. Through the years both parties have borrowed from social security to pay other things. That should be illegal. I believe that if the government had to limit it’s spending to the amount of revenue collected and there was a reasonable limit on the debt ceiling they would spend our much more wisely than they currently do.
If we had a consumption tax then those who spend the most (ie: billionaires) would pay the most in taxes. This leaves the problem of those earning below the poverty line paying taxes on the necessities of life.

I just read up on this. The idea of a 23% sales tax on all products and services sounds silly. I go to the dentist and get a bill for $300 and the tax woudl add $92 giving me a net bill of $392!!! I would urge you to dig deeper into the plan. As an example The Fair ax would eliminate soc. sec and health deductions from your paycheck, interest income and capital gains would also be eliminated. When these (as well as other hidden taxes) are eliminated going up the supply chain the result would be the lowering of price to the end user from 15% to 40% depending on the industry. Do you really think my local car repair shop is going to offer the same price for credit card (leaving a proof of transaction trail) vs. cash (the NO tax alternative)? Most people would be happy to pay in cash with a tip to the owner for not collecting the tax. This concept is going nowhere becasue it would never actually work.
Whether it’s cash, credit card or check the shop owner will pay the tax when he purchases items for personal use. Also consider that the shop owner will pay less for his supplies with the Fair Tax and he will not pay taxes on his employees earnings. The IRS will only have to audit those who are supposed to collect taxes. I believe the only fair tax is a tax EVERYONE pays. Politicians know well they can gain a support base by giving everything to them for free. All that is necessary after that is to gain the support of a minor percent sufficient to get approximately half the total vote.
For instance, if the Democrats nominated some roadkill to run for president, that stinking piece of roadkill is guaranteed to get 35 percent of the vote. All any live candidate needs to do is gain another 15 percent or so from the thinking population to be elected.
To change that, the 35 percent that is built into any election for any Democrat needs to be forced to pay their fair share of what the government costs. Then, when they vote for their own good, they will vote for the person who will cost them the least. The Democrats have no answer for that. Their only plan is to take from one half to give to the other half.
We need a flat tax where EVERYONE pays their fair share of what the government we elect costs. Otherwise, we will eventually create a situation where it is impossible to pay for the benefits being given to a population that does not earn it, and all benefits will diminish, then disappear, and nobody will have anything.
The only way to save our country is if everyone has a vested interest. A flat tax is the only feasible way to achieve that.

On a practical level how would that work? The FAA runs out of money so they just turn off the air control radar and go home and we hope the planes land OK? If the government continues on its current path, the FAA will go away forever because money doesn’t grow on trees. This is when Congress earns its money we give to them. The first step toward fiscal sanity is being able to generate a budget. We haven’t seen a budget in 4 years.

Let see how it would work. We cut the FAA to it’s size 15 years ago. That would mean they could safely handle the number of planes we had 15 years ago. So the airlines would have to cut 20 to 30% of flights. How do you think grandma trying to visit the kids for Thanksgiving will feel when her flight is cut due to the “Tea Party Shutdown”. There will be an immediate negative effect. Those consumers earning the least will purchase less. They will not only have less subsidy from the govenment in their disposable income, but they will also have to take from their income the tax they have to pay. However, those who have made the choices that enable higher earnings, like you and me, will pay about the same tax rate.
The end result will be, everyone will have a direct concern about who they send to Washington. Because they will be voting in their best interest, they will be inclined to send people who will take less money from them. The less money the government takes out of the economy, the more money the economy has to grow with. The less money the government has, the fewer harmful regulations we will have. All the harm the government does will diminish if everyone has to pay taxes.
And, if someone in Washington wants everyone to pay more of their money in taxes, they will have to be a lot more convincing than saying something idiotic like “you have to pass it to know what’s in it.”

Jerry, I followed that issue closely. I am a scientist, an engineer. Much isn’t known for certain. But, from what I have seen, I am convinced the pdf document originally placed on the White House internet site that was supposed to be a scan of a birth certificate is fraudulent. Just a couple of reasons are: the layering is characteristic of a pdf file created and not scanned, and the boundary of one layer is exactly the boundary between two halves of a signature, one half obviously created by a human hand changing pressure as the angle changes, and the other half obviously computer generated.
I have seen no proof. But, I am convinced what they are showing is fraudulent. Now, why would they do that?

Actually, it’s very easy to control your federal income tax withholding. And you do it precisely by going to your employer and telling them to stop withholding income tax from your paychecks. And there’s nothing particularly suspicious about it. People do it all the time for mundane reasons.

The Founding Fathers, by the magic of modern medicine, had been cloned. A great battle then ensued for the heart and soul of America. It came to pass that the socialists were purged from the government, and the propaganda ministry-like media was destroyed and replaced by a media dedicated to reporting the truth, and serving the people, not the government. It was decided that the proper punishment for the offenders was to be transported to the very tip of Florida, made to face south, and then commanded to swim for their true homeland. Hopefully they made it, but if not, at least they were given a choice and a fighting chance. I don’t really know what happened at that point because I woke up. It was a lovely dream though!
I support all efforts to restore the federal government as stated in founding documents. I believe that effort should begin by privatize the existing wretched K-12 school indoctrination system.

Anyhow, your question, “Who would I pick for Speaker of the House?” Well, honestly I don’t know a whole bunch of them by name and inclination. Some folks on here were mentioning someone like Allen West. He’s leaving but could he still do it? If so he’d be great. I like Michele Bachmann, or Paul Ryan would probably be O.K.. Lots of people say that someone like Michele Bachmann is damaged goods, but damaged by whom I ask. Anyone that the socialists in our government, and our media sees as a threat, they are going to go after like a pack of mad dogs. We need someone who will stand firm no matter what and give those “mad dogs” as good as they send. Stand firm on our principles, get the truth out there about what we are doing and why and go for it! Anybody who fits that description I’m all for!

I am inclined to think that Donald Trump has such strong aspects to be in a position of leadership, and anyone would conclude that he is a very experienced and capable opponent of things like Marxist ideology, there would obviously be a campaign to create the aura of defeatism around him, just like the entire American population was indoctrinated with during the Cold War.

I would love to do an experiment one day and have the liberals live on one side of the country and all the REAL conservatives live on the other and we would be our own countries. we would run “our countries” in a liberal manner and also a conservative manner. I bet at the end of the year the conservatives would have low unemployment, would be fiscally in the black by a huge amount and the liberals would have higher unemployment than the country does now AND they would be begging to borrow one more time to cover their huge deficits they’ve run up, yet again, to cover their fantasy spending sprees!!!!

There are the Free New Hampshire and Free Wyoming movements. In each plan the idea is to move 20,000 Tea Party members to each state in order to influence the state government and local elections. So far 1,150 people have signed up but only 103 have actually moved.

I just have to comment on this: Tragedy in Connecticutt.
I just got through watching Obama try to shed some crocodile tears about the tragedy in Connecticutt. Will this fraud ever show himself as who he really is?
It was a hospital in Chicago. A baby had survived an abortion and was crying while laying near the operating table. It was so disturbing to the operating room staff that the doctor in charge ordered a nurse to remove the baby from the operating room and put it in a closet until it died. Eight hours later the baby died from the injuries it received during the abortion.
This so disturbed some members of the Illinois legislature that a bill was drafted making it a crime to murder a baby that survived an abortion.
Yup. You guessed it. Obama uttered the most useless word that commonly comes out of his mouth: “present”.
Now, he pretends to want to cry over the tragedy in Connecticutt. Crocodile tears.
This weekend probably 15 people will be murdered in the city of Chicago alone. This has been going on for decades. From the beginning of the Iraq war to the end about 4000 Americans were killed. During that exact same time in Chicago, over 3800 people were murdered. Chicago is as bad as a full-scale war, and I never heard any phoney liberal cry about that.
If the tragedy in Connecticutt upsets any of you fraudulent liberal Democrats here, I’ve got a suggestion for you. Just pretend the innocent children killed were killed by abortion. It’s the same thing.
The last thing I want to hear after a tragedy like this is someone who is responsible for millions of innocent children killed pretend to cry about it.
This is really not the time to make political statements. This was a horrible tragedy. It’s a time to pause and give prayer to the victims families in Newtown Connecticut.

I will be the first to admit that I do not know a lot of specifics about a whole lot of things. What I do know though is that I’ve been to a lot of rally’s in D.C., and Michele Bachmann has always showed up, and she’s always made a lot of sense to me. Same thing with interviews I’ve seen with her on T.V.. Also, from what I know of her voting record she seems to be pretty solid. Of course I thought the Supreme Court was going to overturn Obamacare, and that Romney was going to win the election too, so I could be wrong. Anyhow, if not her then fine get Boehner’s sorry butt out of there and replace him with someone who will serve us!
Goose, I love what Bachman is and has done. I was 100 percent with her. I truly wish she didn’t have those flaws exposed in the primaries. Considering what we are up against, do you think she can have those flaws and still command support sufficient to stop the takeover of our government?
That is a judgement call. She supports all the right things. But, will she be a capable commander? Will she ever show those same flaws again? You know she will be the number one target of the entire media hiding everything about the Democrats for us and even inventing fraudulent “information” about anyone who opposes the Democrats’ takeover of our govenment.

To my knowledge, Boehner is the only nominee… at this time.
We really need to change that. Some TEA Party member of the House at least needs to put some other name up there. Boehner is already purging the TEA Party from committees, so there’s nothing to lose there.
Put several names into the nomination. Keep Boehner from getting a majority of votes until it gets down to the last two names.

It is all too late. The 47% have reached the tipping point. People who have worked hard for their money (and most of us worked hard and still don’t have a lot of money) and business are the bad guys. We don’t do our share. Well, it seems to me when we raise taxes on business to give to the 47% then there is less money to give to us workers in the form of wages.
A lady out here in California was telling me her job was to take care of her grandchildren. Her daughter had two children and not husband and is attending college because her welfare ran out. Grandma gets $2,000 a month to watch her grandchildren. I check on the county welfare site and discovered that welfare pays the prevailing wage for childcare and hiring a family member is okay.
Why am I paying for a grandmother to watch her own grandchildren?
