A Lesson in Washington Campaign Tactics

Of the four or five regular magazines and newspapers read on Capitol Hill every day, Politico is probably the least policy-focused, and the one that places the most value on entertainment and drama. However, sometimes that reporting focuses on the biggest drama in Washington – elections – and a new article on Politico’s website outlines an important yet subtle distinction between actions on Capitol Hill designed to do what’s actually good for the country and what’s good for the Member’s re-election campaign.
Here are a few examples highlighted by Politico:
Most of the article continues like this, and those who follow the above link will notice it focuses on House Republicans. While this could be seen as media bias, the House is where more legislation is passed than in the Senate and where Republicans are clearly the dominant – and thus the more vulnerable – party. But the Senate plays this game as well:
The House isn’t alone in showcasing its vulnerable members. One of the main items on the Senate’s agenda this week is a bill aimed at helping veterans find jobs. That’s sponsored by Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson, up for reelection against Republican Rep. Connie Mack in the perennial swing state of Florida this fall.
Now, to be fair, some of the bills Politico highlighted are good for the country. But passed this late in the session, with only a little over two legislative work weeks left before the November elections and the “fiscal cliff?” The passage of these bills is somewhat reminiscent of the infamous government agencies that buy a lot of material at the end of the government’s fiscal year, or the scientific centers that suddenly come out with grand theories on the world at the end of the fiscal year, both done in order to not lose funding in the next fiscal year.
Of course, cover is provided by the House leadership for these bills. However, note the section that has been bolded for this post:
A spokesman for House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), who runs the floor, said his office evaluates what bills to schedule based on their merits.
“It’s not unusual for there to be a larger number of bills considered before the end of the fiscal year or before the extended district work period preceding a lame duck,” Doug Heye, Cantor’s deputy chief of staff, wrote in an email.
In other words, when it’s really important to be noticed by the electorate, you can count on Members to take advantage.
One additional note: often Members introduce legislation that has no chance of passing, or is duplicative, just to impress constituents. One example of this is H.R. 787, the No Social Security for Illegal Immigrants Act of 2011. Despite the important-sounding name, the fact is that no Social Security is allowed to go to illegal immigrants, so this legislation is truly useless – or worse than useless, since staffers had to create it, print it, and introduce it, meaning it cost taxpayers some small measure of their tax dollars.
What do you think? Should Members of Congress be trying to pass bills that may possess some benefit for the country just for re-election purposes? Or could that be a violation of federal law, which states that Members are to explicitly keep election and official work separate? Let us know in the comments.

Great article!. The voting citizens of this country need to really pay attention this eleciont to avoid the what I term the Ross Perot strategy…
The magic number to defeat Barack Obama on Election Day is:
18.
Explanation…
Make no mistake about it, this election will be very, very close. The polling data makes that clear. The reason the polling data is showing it close is because they are not telling you the entire story. What is the entire story – the Ross Perot effect. Another words these pollsters already know what I am telling but they nor the media are telling you this until the SURPRISE ending. What is the 2012 surprise?? The 3rd party, i.e., Libertarian Party or Constitutional Party, etc. More importantly, the surprise is who are these parties drawing from???
Right now the conventional wisdom being spewed by the media and pollsters is that the Libertarian Party is that it pulls equally from Dems and Republicans. They say this because of the Libertarian platform that says they don’t care about legalizing narcotics, abortion, and other socialist causes so they draw from the Dems and because they believe in smaller gov’t NOW they appeal to small gov’t Republicans who are disenchanged with Romney and don’t trust he will do what he says. Not so fast Tonto! I ain’t buying it with regards to who the Libertarian Party is drawing from.
How many Democratic socialists are narcotics legalized now supporters or disenchanged young people that just can’t vote for a Republican for any reason (plus other leftwing issues) VS.; how many Republicans that don’t trust Romney to make gov’t small NOW? I would say the number of Republicans/Independents that don’t trust Romney is far greater (whether for him being a Mormon, setting up Romneycare in MA, etc. but still smaller since the selection of Ryan as VP) than the number of Dems that will be pulled into Libertarian Party and the Constitutional Party.
The Constitution Party is for all those that want smaller gov’t now, a return to a balanced budget, Congress minting money, etc without all the Libertarian socialist causes in their platform. So why is the election even close at all given the state of this economy and the foreign policy stance of this administration – he is worse than Carter on foreign policy and the economy – I didn’t think that was possible. So why is the election even giving the appearance of being close? Because the Libertarian and Constitutional Parties are pulling more Republicans and Indpendents than Democrats. It really isn’t that hard.
This IS the November SURPRISE the Media is going to pull out of their hats. The Democrats aren’t going to risk a war as the October surprise as Ann Coulter or others seem to indicate. It is much, much simpler. Demonize Romney and get Republicans and Independents to vote for a third party. Very simple. How hard is it? Easier than you think. It is what Democrats have been doing EVERY time they have NO chance of winning and they absolutely WANT to win. The most recent is Clinton in 1992 by getting Republicans and Independents to vote for Ross Perot to the tune of 15% – this cost Bush the an election that should not have even been close.
More importantly, the electoral college map makes a close election almost unavoidable because of the third party break outs that are NOT being shown in ANY electoral college map because they don’t get a full majority in the state so they NEVER show up in the Electoral College map! As a result the media don’t have to talk about it because supposedly they are insignificant.
Why The Magic Number To Defeat Obama Is 18.?…
Take a close look at a current electoral college map show red/blue states and you’ll notice that just a handful of states (the too, close to call states) will ultimately decide the election.
But drill down further and at the epicenter of it all stands one state and its 18 electoral votes.
Ohio.
When you do the math of the current map, Ohio is pivotal. Yes, it is possible for either Romney or Obama to win without winning Ohio, but without Ohio the math gets difficult. Without Ohio, Romney and Obama must “essentially sweep the rest of the toss-up states with the exception of one or two states.” The other state is Florida of course – yet again.
Ok, so what is going on???
This election WILL BE decided by how the third party vote goes in OH and FL!! This is why the Dems are demonizing Romney – not for their own goofball voters and the “getting out the vote of the base” you keep hearing about from the media – they already have them; but it IS to disenchant as many Independents into voting for a 3rd party as possible.
The Democrats know most Independents aren’t going to vote for Obama so they are trying to get them to vote for a 3rd party candidate just like they did in 1992 with Ross Perot!! They demonized Bush enough with the “Its the economy stupid” that the Republicans and Independents who voted “Ross for Boss” threw the election to Clinton!! This is the Democratic game plan AGAIN! The 1992 election would have NEVER been close if Ross Perot did not exist! The same situation is being setup AGAIN!!
What was the number that threw that CLOSE election to Clinton. It was a whopping 15%. Yes, that is how far ahead Bush would have been if Ross Perot did not exist in that election!!! It wouldn’t have been clsoe at all except for Perot. Perot even said he disliked Bush and that was why he was in the race – to make sure Bush did not win!! Perot drew from Republicans and Independents who didn’t like Bush!
So why isn’t there a third party Liberal party of any significance??? Because Soros will not let it happen!!!! Notice how all the anarchists, black panthers, Jackson’s “Rainbow coalition supporter”, unions, etc never form their own party! Why? Because they are organized to stay in the Democratic Party by Soros and his Open Society group.
So what does this mean and how do you use it to defeat the Democratic Party NOW?? You get the message out through the Tea Party Supporters in these states to VOTE REPUBLICAN and NOT a third party or you will hand the election over to the Democrats and LOSE your Constitutional Republic NOW!!!
It doesn;t matter how bad the faults of the Republicans are for anything you can dream up. It is all we got to stop the Democrats from destroying this country FOREVER! Look at the STUPIDITY displayed in EGYPT and LIBYA by this President and Hillary with this Arab Spring support policy. What has it got us? It brought into power the Muslim Brotherhood all over the middle east. This President IGNORED the intelligence warning of immenent attacks in Libya on 9/11/12. They didn’t even warn the Ambassador who was traveling TO Libya.
We now have a dead Ambassador in Libya. The Muslim Brotherhoodin these countries are and will remain terrorists and has President supports them though his support for this Arab Spring. They hate this country and always will. Now, this President wants to give Egypt 1.5B in aid!!! Why are we giving any money to these terrorists at all??? Killing an Ambassador IS an act of WAR!!!
Here is the answer:
There is only ONE way to stop Obama, Soros and the Democrats from destroying this country – and the world economy for that matter!!! Vote Republican this election!! The Republicans must use their Tea Party supporters to get out in OH, VA, FL, MI, CO, WI and PA and have them knock on doors to get Independents to vote REPUPLICAN not a third party.
The stakes are too, great! After the election it is a different story but for now the Tea Party supporters and Independents MUST vote Republican OR WE LOSE THE COUNTRY. It is as simple as that.
Hold Romney’s feet to the fire and make him follow through on REPEALING OBAMA CARE. Make him follow through on the border as the Tea Party supporters and the citizens have demanded. Make him seal the border. Make him reduce the spending and the size of gov’t as he has said he will do. If he doesn’t then form a Third Party but AFTER this election!!! This is the only path to victory at this time. Otherwise, support for a third party guarantees a win for the Democrats!!!
Vote smartly. This election is just too, important for the future of our country for which many have fought and died for.
Get the word out now before it is too, late.
