Career Politicians Think Living within Your Means is “Extreme”
May 24, 2012 at 8:06 am in News by Tea Party Patriots 20 Comments

The Tea Party Patriots, the nation’s largest tea party organization, today blasted Vice President Biden and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid for bashing ordinary Americans who believe in governmental fiscal responsibility.
Jenny Beth Martin, Co-founder and National Coordinator of Tea Party Patriots, reacted strongly to accusations that the Tea Party Movement bears responsibility for the financial crisis facing our nation:
“Only entrenched career politicians in Washington, D.C., would think living within your means is ‘extreme.’ What is truly extreme are the lengths Vice President Biden and Sen. Reid will go to blame everyone else for their lack of courage to lead this nation out of the financial wreckage they helped create. What is extreme is a Senate that refuses to pass a budget for three straight years. What is extreme is accelerating the nation’s financial troubles by refusing to cut government spending. What is extreme is a Congress, a President and a Vice President that don’t have the courage to lead this nation back to economic prosperity. Dysfunction and overspending is troubling and extreme.
The Vice President and Senator Reid are now screaming that Americans are ‘extremists’ for demanding fiscal responsibility. Is there a better example of how distorted and divisive this Administration and Congress have become in the national debate?
There used to be a time in America when spending money you didn’t have was frowned upon. Mr. Biden and Reid’s combined 64 years in Washington has clouded their ability to understand that a $15 trillion deficit and no budget is extreme mismanagement.”
The blame game is ramping up in DC to try and put the blame on us when Congress reaches its debt ceiling AGAIN without having done ANYTHING to stop the problems caused by its own dereliction of duty.
If placing the blame on an organization formed solely for the purpose of fixing government strikes you as extreme, please let us know you’re with us because it’s going to get pretty ugly before it gets pretty in DC.

I’d like to see them live within MY means…live on MY budget for 6 months and see if we can bring them back to reality
In the eyes of people like Biden and Reid, clear-thinking people are dangerous – because clear thinking threatens obfuscation, and these career politicians thrive on obfuscation. I have always struggled to live within my means – this economy has heightened that struggle, and I am glad for the struggle, because it sharpens me. But a government budget is a fairly simple thing requiring straightforward, timely decisions. It’s time for the change we really need in Washington, and that means fiscal and social liberals can start packing for Europe.
I cannot grasp the reality that we actually have this kind of defense for reckless spending coming from elected officeholders in our government! We are living the Twilight Zone nightmare..seriously!
I think that a plumber is equally qualified, if not MORE qualified, to be President than a community organizer.
Typical. When you control the media, anyone who makes sense, you just slander and accuse of extremism and or racism. It’s all you can do when your argument makes no sense whatsoever.
In the words of Maximus, a time for honoring yourself, will soon be at an end.
I was wondering the cite for your statement above that”The Vice President and Senator Reid are now screaming that Americans are ‘extremists’ for demanding fiscal responsibility.” It helps to fight he left with their own words, but citations are necessary. Thanks a bunch!
Hi Tom,
Reid and Biden have both labeled the Tea Party and their members “extremists”.
Name calling is a favorite tactic of the democratic spin machine…
The article points out in a clear and concise manner that Biden and Reid are
in fact the extremists for their tax and over spend policies which have brought this
country to the financial mess we are in today. November cannot get here early enough for me. I am looking forward to some real “hope and change”.
Mike
Biden don’t care It’s not his money being spent.left to there plan the dems would ride there communist slogan forward right of the cliff.be FORwarned.o’$ intent is to destroy the American Way.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon Church) teaches/advises that one should live below his/her/their means. A practice the church itself follows. The reason the church teaches this principle is so that one can prepare for emergencies, (illness, loss of employment, etc) by saving money so one is not a burden, and better able to care for themselves. By extention businesses, and other entities would be wise to follow the practice, as the church itself does. Senator Reid should know this.
Why do we need a religious institution to teach us common sense values? That being said, lets look to the accounting profession for our reasoning. When our country experienced all the financial scandals like Enron, WorldCom, Tyco and others, our government responded by demanding certain financial reforms. One of these reforms was to require that publicly traded busineses use what have become known as GAAP Generally Accepted Accounting Principals. One basic rule of GAAP is that revenues must be accounted for, and recorded in the period in which they are received. Why is this important? Revenues received today would go into accounts today, and would be available to pay for bills today. Once those funds have been exhausted, you are done spending money until additional revenues are received. There is no such thing as “borrowing” from the social security trust fund to “fund” ongoing expenditures. When you debit one account to credit another to release funds, there can not be a negative amounts . For every credit there has to be an offsetting debit, and for every debit there is an offsetting credit. In other words, the books have to balance. This is called accrual based accounting. Every business major takes it in college, most every business in America uses it to balance their books. If you want to get a loan at a bank for your business, they will want to see these kinds of financial records. If they are required of American businesses, why not the American government? When they go to borrow to extend our debt, why doesn’t the FED ask for balance sheets, adjusted trial balance sheets, and income statements? Businesses need these to show financial solvency, can our government show financial solvency ?
Oh and who was the last person to bring up a balanced budget? Ron Paul, but he’s a wacko………… Can’t talk about Ron Paul
@gayunclesam – We need the religious institution to teach us common sense values, because that IS where they came from in the first place!
Don’t they have a clue? They work for us?
Tom McElv,
Yours is exactly the kind of question we anticipate intelligent readers asking. That is why we actually did include the sources, but maybe we were a little too subtle here.
If you click on Biden’s or Reid’s name, it will take you to a source. Most of the Biden sources have now disappeared, as you may have noticed if tried to find one yourself. Funny how that happens.

The main reason the United States is it its present financial situation is that we have been following the wrong leaders, both Republican and Democrat. Ron Paul as a Libertarian is a fresh departure from the status quo and would make a much better and wiser president than either Mitt Romney or the present dufus in that office today. I feel that the Tea Party needs to get behind the Libertarian party/candidate and make ourselves heard from now thru November and just maybe we will be able to get something accomplished. It is a sure bet that the Tea Party alone nor the Libertarian party alone will be able to make enough of a difference to matter. Joining together can only strengthen our cause. Together we can effect change in Washington and in state and local governments as well.
I’ve always been impressed by the industry and wholesomeness of the Mormons. We could do a Hell of a lot worse.
I am one of those unemployed who have dropped from the roles (although I never saw 99 weeks of benefits). When you live off of limited savings, you need to understand fiscal responsibility. I send out 5 to 6 job applications/resumes daily with no/little response. Yet, I still don’t think government should save me. I just wish they would get out of the way.
Dear NCBOOKWORM,
Hang in there. Being smart and patriotic is going to make a comeback in the USA!

Liberals are Liars and that is with a capital L. The entire Liberal program is a lie and Liberal Politicians are always blaming others for the problems they have created. I really hope the general public will wake up in time for the coming Presidential elections this fall so that we can avoid the disaster that is Barack Obama who hasn’t a clue as to what he is doing. Obama’s high poll numbers shows that the populace does not understand why we have the problems we are having with the economy being at the top of the list but also includes other things such as a totally botched handling of foreign policy which has diminished our standing in the World and given Communist China more ways in which they can expand their influence to our detriment. Smoke and mirrors is all Obama and Biden are about, a real carnival circus side show only I am not laughing.
Hey Nationalist,
We’re with ya – not laughing just working. If everyone who feels as you do works hard to get those who should vote but don’t, then we will win! We will get our country back and we will put people in office who follow the Constitution and love America. The Constitution is still the law of the land; we are still the sovereign people – but we need to act like the sovereign people!
Thanks for your support!
